So, the green Media button on my Harmony 680 isn't working correctly. When I press it, nothing happens but other than "***Movie List***" displays on the remote's screen.

I added my HTPC as Windows Vista Media Center Edition device.

The the best of my understanding, it's not possible to configure the Media button, correct?

What give? It used to work fine years ago. I'm just setting up my first HTPC in years.

Thanks for your help!

In their infinite wisdom, harmony made some "updates" that killed the button's functionality. However, Harmony support had some internal work around to get it working again, not sure if that's still available. You'd have to contact Harmony level 2 support for this.

I received a very prompt reply from tech support. Unfortunately, not a very helpful answer. Thought I would share the response that I received:

"Thank you for your recent inquiry about your Harmony Remote

"You are right in that this is a know bug and we are working to get this problem solved. Unfortunately, there is not any work around available for this problem yet, but we are hoping that it will become available shortly.

"If you would like further information and other tips on customizing your remote please visit the FAQ portion of your Harmony member website. To access, Click “Support”, then click “FAQ” while logged in your Harmony member page.

"We hope that we were able to assist you in resolving this issue, however if you are still experiencing any difficulties with your Harmony Remote, please feel free to contact us again.

"Regards,

"Harmony Technical Support"

I did respond back and ask whether:

1. There is any way to be notified once a fix is available?

2 There is some way to revert my remote to an old version of the software where the Media button did work?

I'll report back if I get an answer.

It's pathetic that Harmony can't just be honest about these problems, they haven't the resources to fix all the problems they have and just beat around the bush with PR-ish "politically correct" answers. I'll reply to your questions:

1. This bug has been a "known bug" for more/less the past year. Don't hold your breath about it getting fixed, the 680 series is no longer produced so it's not near enough of a priority... just like the 1000 stuck volume up or other bugs "fixes" they are always working on fixing ... they release one update and it ends up causing a bunch of other bugs (August 2007 update still brings painful memories back).

2. No, you cannot revert back to an older version. Technically, you could if they sent you all the right files, but because the updates are compiled through their servers, it would require them to rollback the entire changes they made on their update servers.

Sorry you have to go through this, hopefully you can still use your remote in some capacity.

In case anyone is interested, here are key points from Harmony's follow-up reply:

"...We apologize for the inconvenience, unfortunately it is not possible to revert back to an older version. This will not allow you to update your remote. However we have set you up so that you will receive an email once the bug is resolved. We do apologize once again for the inconvenience..."

as I said ... sorry to say, you likely won't be receiving any emails. Interesting how they claim to send emails now, as they never maintained any mailing lists for bug fixes before (not to my knowledge anyways).

By the time they fix it, email will be obsolete.
Logitech Harmony remotes are Crippleware.
