I have a model 676. My system has dvd player, Yamaha sound bar and Sharp LCD TV. When I switch from watching dvd activity to watching TV the DVD correctly powers off. But then when I power off the TV the DVD powers on, loads and plays the dvd. I must then switch to device mode on the remote to manually power of the DVD. What programming changes do I need to make on my website.

Also, I just ordered a Harmony one. How do I replace the 676 with the One.? (i have not used the website for more than a year when I first received my 676. So please pardon my newbie questions)

How are you "powering off the TV"? By hitting the OFF button? Check the power settings for the DVD player.

What happens if you use the OEM remotes and do the same thing (power off the TV with DVD player off)?

Yes, there is a link in the software to upgrade to a new remote - it moves everything automatically. If you want to use the 676 in another room - create a new account for that one.

I power off the TV by hitting the "off" button on the 676. When I use the TV's OEM to turn the TV off (with the DVD off) the DVD does not go on.

Could you please tell me what setting on the website I should set my power settings to as it has been some time since i programmed the remote on the website.

Thanks

After I sent you the emai i went on the website and in the "activity" mode I told it to send a "power off" command when I leave the watching DVD activity. Then when I swithched to watch tv the dvd powered of. But when I turned off the using the off command on the 676 the dvd player went on.

You should let the Smart State control the power. Adding power commands to the Activity Start/Exit macros, or using manual power commands will cause the Smart State to go out of sync. The Smart State tracks the input and power status of each device, but only within its confine. Using the device mode, check if your DVD player supports the discrete "PowerOn" and "PowerOff" commands. Make sure their action is discrete and not toggling like for the "PowerToggle" command. If so, then configure the DVD device power settings (under Device > Settings > Adjust power settings) by selecting the option "A button on the remote for On, and a different button for Off". Else, select the option "One button on the remote for turning it both On and Off" (then select the "PowerToggle" command).

Thanks for the response. On the actual OEM remote for my (OPPO) DVD there is one (red) button that controls on and off ie a toggle on/off. Yet in the device mode on the Harmony remote it shows 2 separate buttons for powering ie one for power on and one for power off. Given this what should be my power settings per your above response?

Does the Power On and Power Off actually do that? Or are they Power Toggle?
Test it and ensure that they are discrete or not.

Always use discrete commands if they're available (separate button for on and off) and IF they work. Be sure to test them in Device mode first as Sucubus recommended. Same goes for input selection.

I tested the "power on and "power off" buttons in the device mode on the Harmony and they each do what their title says..(yet as a said before there is only one power button on the OEM remote for the DVD.) So what do I do? for example do I need to teach the Harmony the discrete functions? And does any of this have anything to do with the original problem I posted (ie the power for the DVD goes back on after I use the DVD, save my place on the DVD (by pressing "eject") switch the activity to "watch TV" and then use the "off" button on the harmony during the watch tv activity. Then the DVD powers on again? Thanks

You do what your device supports - not what the limited OEM remote can or can't do. Since your device supports the discrete PowerOn and PowerOff commands, then reconfigure its power settings (under Device > Settings > Adjust power settings) to use them. You don't need to teach them, since there are already there. You simply select them from the command drop-down list in the Adjust power settings.

You original problem what caused by the usage of power command(s) outside the Smart State confine and the power settings was set to use the toggle method. You need to remove these outside power commands(s) from the activity start/exit macros.

I changed the power settings for my DVD as you suggested.

As for my original problem, I don't know how to "remove these outside power commands" as you suggest. Right now for the Watch TV activity the screen that is entitled "when you start" says

DVD: On
TV: ON
Input:5

The screen entitled "Before devices are turned off DVD does the following": "DVD power off command is sent to DVD"

For the Watch TV activity, it now says:"When you start activity, remote will ensure that sustem is set up as follows:
PVR:on
TV:On
TV set to input 4.

Please note there is no page for "Before Devices are turned off...." screen like there is for Watch DVD activity.

What do I need to change these configurations and how do I do it.?

It's the "power off" command you said you had set on activity exit in post #4. Take that out or any other like it in the activity start or exit.

OK done. But with the deletion of the "power off" command, how will the remote know to turn off the DVD when switchng from Watch DVD to Watch TV? (I don't want to select "turn off unused devices" as I always want my PVR to be on.)

The "Before Devices are turned off" message was because you had chosen to manually send those commands at the exit of THAT particular activity. You should remove those altogether.

When you enter an activity, the harmony turns on any equipment that's needed but is not already on and it turns off any equipment that is on but is not needed for that activity. It does this automatically - it's called Smart State. It keeps track of whether the equipment is off or on so it knows whether to turn it off or on for each activity. "Leave unused devices on" tells it not to turn off devices that are not needed in that activity because you want to switch back to them later (presumably). You would use that e.g. if you wanted to pause the DVD, switch to watch TV to check sports scores, then go back to watch DVD. You wouldn't want the DVD to be turned off, then back on in that case. Normally you don't need to use that option.

When you added the extra power command in the watch DVD activity you were defeating the smart state tracking - smart state thought it was ON but you manually turned it off. So when smart state tried to turn if off - it actually turned it back on (using the power toggle).

If you switch to discrete on/off commands that won't happen. Harmony will send the OFF command twice which won't hurt. If you send 2 power toggles, however, you'll turn the device back on or back off again. That's what was happening. That's why you should never send power commands manually - let smart state take care of it after you make sure your devices' power options are setup correctly.

If you don't want to use the non-selective "Leave unused device on", then add your PVR to all activities. It will turn on at the beginning of any activity session and turn off only at the end of you activity session when you press the Harmony "Off" button. Or you could use one of the other 2 options in the PVR device Power configuration (Adjust power settings):
o I want to leave this device on all the time
With this option, the activities (including the special "Off" activity button) will no longer control the power of that device. However, the activity "Help" feature will still track what the power state should be and will issue the appropriate power command when invoked.
o There are no power buttons...
With this option, you will have to control the power manually or via the device mode.
