I guess I deserve it because I keep coming back to their products but I think they have finally upset me enough to move on to something else.
Why can't they make a charging system that works?
Mine is dead again and I can't bring it to life. Are there any external charging devices one can use with the batteries this thing uses?

They do make a charging system that works - on the Harmony ONE. Too bad the 880/890 was so bad.

I put it in the charger with about a third to the remaining power indicated. When I went to use it I found it totally dead. I moved the 880 (earlier POS) battery into it and nothing. Can't get it to react despite what I do holding it in the charger, etc.
Might there be a reset function I can do by plugging it into my PC or something or do you think it just died?

Try this. 21. I need to update my remote's firmware in safe mode, how do I do it?
start the software on your computer remove battery from remote press and hold the off button connect the remote to the USB cable when remote is connected it should show "Safe Mode" in the LCD (power is provided by USB at this time) release the off button initiate a firmware update in the software after successful firmware update, update the remote with your settings disconnect the remote from the USB cable reinsert the battery in the remote wait for the remote to come up

Thank you for this. It was purely a battery and charger issue. Turned out that I had a spare charger dock. Bought an 890 shortly after getting a new dock for the crappy 880 dock I put in the drawer. Charged right up. Just hope it lasts long enough to install something new and sh*t can Harmony for good.

My 890 PRO works like a charm also with one minor exception which is easily fixed. Occasionally the charger contacts on the remote may need to be cleaned (I use a pencil eraser.) I have only had to do this twice in the year & a half I have had the remote and know it is time when the remote beeps repeatedly when you put it in the charger like it is establishing & losing connection over and over.

I find that my remotes charge much easier if they still have a good amount of battery left.
