I've never done RF on a Harmony, only done two Harmonys that clients already have. Now here's a 1000 that is working thru an IR extender, and client would like RF instead.

Can the RF extender be simply added or do you have to tell the software it exists? Is this model's RF reliable?

Thank you!

According to the review ([Link: remotecentral.com]) it is RF capable (see mid way down the page) - never used it myself so I can't speak to it's effectiveness. I suspect the extender needs to be added and setup through the software.

You need to add the RF extender which is sold separately

You must add the extender through the software. Then EVERY time you do a small update you have to hook the extender up again and again. Whenever a customer asks us to add an extender to a 1000 we add 3 to 4 hours of extra time because it's nothing but a hassle. Have Fun!!

Tom,
You have to set-up the RF extender via the Harmony software. Like KGossen said, the extender will need to be updated (via the software) every time that a change is made. That's the biggest PITA with Harmony. Even a simple change like adding a favorite channel icon, or changing the background on the touchscreen will require that the RF extender be updated. So you have to unplug the emitter cables, unplug the unit, and take both the remote and the RF extender to wherever your computer is so that you can update them via USB. After the update you have to go back, plug everything back in, and pray that the update works. I would suggest placing it in a very accessible spot. As for its reliability, I don't think it's any more or less reliable than anything else out there. JMO.

Currently, the 1000 and the 890 are the only Harmony remotes that are RF-capable.

They are only RF compatible with the RF Extender they can not control other RF devices

I don't have an RF remote. But I have read that if you made no changes that affect the extender you can just plug in the remote and the software will skip the extender and just update the remote.

You can verify this on Logi forums.
