I have a new Harmony 890. The remote w/ battery has been in the base cradle for about 19 hours, and there is absolutely no sign that it has charged at all.
The screen is black while on the cradle. If I touch the remote, the red battery icon appears briefly preceded by a message that the battery is very low and needs to be charged. The slide show begins, but turns off within a minute or so. I have never seen a green flashing battery indicator icon.
I have not even had the opportunity to use the remote yet.
Surely this is not normal? How long does it take to get an initial charge?
Any ideas?

Sounds like the remote is not connecting to the base contacts. Try cleaning them and then locating the remote precisely on the base.

I cleaned the base contacts with alcohol, but the remote still does not appear to be charging.
Assuming that my battery is completely dead, should the remote control flash or indicate that it is charging as it sits in the base cradle?
Any troubleshooting ideas?

We've had a few like that lately. DOA batteries and remotes. I'd be getting a new one.

I'm confused as to why you haven't returned it yet...? If it works this reliably out of the box, what can you expect a month from now.
Go to where ever you bought it from. Get customer service to plug in the new one and browse the store. Check back in 15mins, and if it holds any charge, take it home.

A new remote or just a new a battery? A replacement remote, from either from your supplier or direct from Logitech - do it now!

i have had the same issue with these remotes, they seem to have problems sitting in the cradle right especialy if the contacts are dented in. couple solutions, if it is still under the 1 yr warrenty the contact support they will fix you up quick, ( for some reason they sent me a brand new 1000 when all i needed was a base for my 880) second if its not under warrenty try opening the base and puting a folded peice of paper under the contacts so that it keeps them raised, if the contacts are bad wrap a very small peice of foil around the outer two really tight so it doesnt touch the others this will give the contacts a greater surface area

return it or call Harmony support. Harmony will replace it as a warranty issue but it will take a bit of time

I know this sounds stupid but I received my 890 Remote the other day and assumed the battery was already in it (but dead) and put it in the charger. The device lit up once in the base so I assumed it was charging. The next day, it was dead. Finally realized that there was not battery in it and went and pulled it out of the packaging. Needless to say my problem was fixed.
Is it possible you simply haven't put the battery in?
