I think I am going to get one of the Nyko devices. Seems like a slam dunk and I can live without the power on/off feature. Didn't mean to start a fight.

Thanks guys!

lol.... ok, tell you what. Go out and buy yourself any
version of the PS3 and try controlling it with any universal
remote. If you can pull that off without adding some
form of aftermarket device. I'll buy myself a Harmony.

Does everyone in this forum just like to argue....?

And since when do USB ports have IR receivers built into
them....some new spec?

The PS3 understands, accepts and responds to PS2 IR commands. However, it does not have a built-in IR receiver. So yes, you need an aftermarket device which plugs into the USB port to receive the IR commands but the PS3 itself does accept and respond to the commands. The Nyko device doesn't do anything except convert IR to USB. It uses the PS2 IR commands.

Do you just like to argue?

And maybe not in the same breath, but definately the same paragraph:

So are you saying, that if you knew which of the USB terminals to solder a IR receiver to. You could just attach a receiver to the PS3 and have it accept PS2 codes...?

Or....

The Nyko device has a built in converter that "converts" Ir codes to a usable USB command.

Which one is it....?, because I'll tell ya if it's the former (that's the first one) you just stated that all the aftermarket devices out there are a waste of money, and aren't necessary if you're handy with a soldering iron and can afford a $2 IR receiver. Or you're agreeing with me that in fact the PS3 needs something to change the PS2 IR code set to something useful to work with. Make up your mind....

Stick with talking about Harmonys friend.

The original PS2 could be controlled with an add-on IR receiver and remote. The 2nd gen PS2 came with a built in IR receiver and responded to the same IR commands. You can take an original PS2 IR dongle, add it to the PS3 and use the PS2 IR commands to control it. Or you can get the Nyko usb IR dongle or the schmartz usb IR dongle, plug it into the PS3 and use the same PS2 codes to control it.

The only difference is whether the IR receiver is built in (2nd gen PS2) or whether it's external (orig. PS2 and PS3). The PS2 and PS3 firmware understand the IR signals and all devices must convert the IR signal to hard wires at some point.

You can continue to argue semantics about the IR receiver if you want, I just wanted people to understand that the PS2 IR codes do work and all you need is a USB IR receiver.

I literally gave mine away in favor of the IR4PS3. No dongle, simply communicate with the PS3 by the same Blu tooth signals that the Sony Remote uses. Unless Sony were to decide to sabotage their factory remote, the IR4PS3 is 100% bullet proof.
