How can I actually control Windows from a Harmony 525?
I bought a cheap generic USB-IR reader but I think it's useless...
Has anyone ever done such a thing? do I need a MCE remote and everything that comes with it, or is it possible with a simple IR receiver?

I think it should work with the proper IR receiver.

I use mine with a Linksys Extender.

What is the brand/model of your generic USB-IR reader?
Did it come with any documentation?
What application Software(s) does it recommend?
You will need a PC application software like Girder, Eventghost, etc.
You will also need to add a dummy device in the harmony, basically a device you don't have or don't use anymore, and configure the PC application Software to interpret the IR commands and map them to PC keyboard keys or functions.

Okay, thanks for all the replies. The receiver is MobileAction MA-668 but the driver itself is called MA-620.
here's the deal - I understand that all I need is a software which will be able to talk to the receiver and translate the commands it receives to key presses.

I tried uIce but it didn't recognise the receiver. I'll try the other programs you mentioned...
