I have the HR-20 to "always stay on" but there are times when I first hit the "help" key due to another problem and it first turns the HR-20 off...and sometimes when ending another activity it turns it off even though I have it set to "always stay on"...any ideas on how to always keep it on? Should I try a different profile (HR-20 vs. HR20 vs. HR20-700)?

The power setting option 1 "I want to leave this device on all the time" is misleading. It should be renamed to something like "I don't want the activities to control the power of this device". With this option, the activities (including the master "Off") will no longer control the power of that device. However, the activity "Help" feature will track what the power state of that device should be. One solution is to select option 3: "There are no power buttons on my current remote for my DirecTV HR-20 PVR". This option now works again on the 659 with the new S/W update (v 7.2.1). Another solution for option 1 is to give it bogus power command(s).
