I just got a new fan/light that has a remote control w/ RF (I assume since its not IR I know). If I was to get the harmony 890, could it learn the RF commands from the cieling fan remote and still send IR commands to all my components?

Only if the Fan uses Z-Wave RF.

I wonder what the chances are that it uses Z Wave. I am having a hard time finding detailed specs on the fan (it is a Hampyon Bay). Is there a way to find out for sure? Also do most remotes/components use Z Wave or is it more specific to Harmony products?

If you Fan uses Z-Wave, I am sure they would be very proud to list that feature prominently. The Z-Wave technology is still in it's infancy. So far very few device manufacturers have adopted it.

Well I have read up more on Z wave technology and it seems cool but I am still not sure if there is actually a product out that can do exactly what I need with my new ceiling fan. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to go ahead and upgrade to the 890 so I have the capability to do some home automation controls as the technology matures.

The 890 uses Z-Wave to control its own IR repeater, and Harmony probably chose Z-Wave to avoid interferences with all the current existing RF schemes.
