Hi everyone I currently have the Panny 50" plasma with a dvd player and Directv Hr20 DVR. I have the JobSite plasma proof IR receiver, IRCB1 connecting block with the ir emitters that connect to the components and notice when I change the Hr20 remote to Rf instead of IR the range is a lot better, why I dont know? Is it because of the set up I have? Would the Harmony 890 benefit me more than the 880? Thanks a lot

If you have an IR repeater you don't want the 890. The 890 gives you the same capability as your jobsite IR repeater but it will only work with the 890. The jobsite will work with ANY IR remote including the OEM remotes so it's way more flexible.

Are you saying that you get more range from the HR20 remote in RF mode than in IR mode? That's just the difference in the way RF and IR work.

RF (Radio Frequency) goes through wall and does not have to compete will all the other light sources that also emit some of their energy in the IR (Infra-Red) range. However, RF must compete with other RF sources on the same frequency. I remember my neighbour's RF operated garage door opening/closing at random every time a Fire/Police/Ambulance car drove by.

Let me add that RF does have an obvious advantage if you're using the remote from a different room. In the same room you're better off with an IR repeater.

Right. When I program the RC34 remote that came with the HR20 and program it to the RF mode it works way better than the ir mode. The confusing part is I thought RF remotes needed the receiver connected to emitters for rf to work and I dont have that, I have a jobsite ir repeater. Unless the HR20 has a built in rf receiver?

Of ocurse the HR20 has a built-in RF receiver - how else would it work with the OEM remote in RF mode?

...until your neighbour gets the same RF device with no provision to change frequency/address.

Perhaps... until Bluetooth becomes the standard. I can't wait for the day when all devices can communicate with each other. Heck, that could even make the Harmony obsolete. Until then, I'm sticking with IR and the Hot Link Pro IR repeater since my configuration works flawlessly for me.
