I am trying to get my tv volume to go down at start-up of "watch tv" due to the external amp being used in this function. Any ideas??? I can't use "mute" because it stays on the screen...................

Run thru setup of tv activity. At the end you are presented with choices for "yes it's the way I want", "yes, but I want more control", "no, I need setup again". Select "yes, I want more control". Go thru the steps and you will be asked if you want to add commands for any device upon entering or exiting activity. Here you can choose to send volume down or multiple volume down to your tv.

Check to see if you have a discrete command to turn the tv speakers on and off. If so that would be a better solution.

Why wouldn't you want to use the amp for all activities?

Also, double check whether the mute stays on the screen or not. On mine it stays up for 5sec or so then goes away. I didn't realize this at first when I got my harmony and did just what jcb mentioned with several volume commands. If the mute stays on the screen and you do not have a discrete speaker off command, this will be your only option. You will have to send as many commands as it takes to get your volume down to zero from a typical viewing session - which could be anywhere from 10-50 (or more) commands depending on your TV and how loud the volume typically is.

I also prefer not to use the amp for all activities, only with movies or TV shows that include surround sound.

I have a activity called "Watch Kids TV" that uses the speakers in the TV and does not turn on the amp. This is for in the morning when the kids are watching nickelodeon, disney channel and the like and we don't want the amp/surround/subwoofer etc. on. We don't need spongebob in surround sound. I am going to try to increase the transmission time on the tv volume button and the multiple downs upon start-up of "watch tv". What is a disrete command? I don't have any idea what that is, and I have seen it mentioned before. The mute stays on the screen...................

A discrete is a single command that always does one thing. A single button that turns the TV on and off is called a toggle. What happens when you press it depends on what state the device is in. If it's on it turns it off and vice versa. A discrete on button only turns the unit on if it's off and does nothing otherwise. Same for discrete off.

In this case you don't need a discrete - just a set way to turn the speakers on or off which could be one command or a series of commands (like menu->down->down->right->enter). Then you put that sequence at the beginning and end of the activity.

So, it seems my only choice is the multiple volume downs on start-up on one activity, and volume up on the other. Is this correct?

Yes, unless you can turn the speakers on and off or use the mute function (if the mute wording goes away).
