Hello,
I know, this has been asked around here a hundred times. However, I searched and read through a hundred posts but didn't find an answer..
Maybe some kind sould can help me with this...
I am trying to use Harmony 659 (doesn't matter which one really) to control my home made HTPC (which means I do not have an original remote) via Girder 4 and UIRT.
I tried _many_ different devices from harmony's database as a template for the PC remote (sony, panasonic, jvc, ahanix media pc, etc) - all of them give me more or less the same problem (which was discussed on this forum several times)
they either
- repeat same code many times (even if the repeat number is set to zero in that obscure troubleshoot setting)
or
- have more than one code assigned to a single button ("RC5" devices?)

This really drives me mad since all other devices don't do this (if I watch Girder log while pressing buttons on the harmony assigned for my dvd player, I don't see any repeats) - I guess it's because those devices/activities were preconfigured by Logitech.. In contrast, my PC activity was set up manually..

Anyway, I am sure there should be a few people around here controlling their PC's with Harmonies through girder - could you please help me with this?

Thanks!

max

I use Harmony, IgorPlugUSB-IR-receiver and Eventghost-Software. I also used Girder before. Both config work.
Harmony emulates other remotes pretty well. Your problem should be in pc-config, not in harmony. Can you control PC with other (not universal) remotes?

BTW, I created my harmony's HTPC-device from scratch (as a device of type "TV-Video-Combination" from unknown brand) and learned it with commands from another universal remote (it was a pocket pc with remote control software). This allows me to add new commands if I need them. I also use the second remote to check if PC can detect new commands, before I push them to harmony.

Hugbug,
Thanks for replying.
You see, it's the same circle the other people with the same problem got into.
I understand that if I had an original remote, than I could learn the codes into harmony.

My main question is - is there a good device in harmony's database to use as a template???

Which device on your pocket pc did you use to program your harmony?

I tried quite a few devices including some "TV-Video-Combination" too. They all were not quite perfect.
- two or more codes per button
- two or more repeats per button
- different codes depending on the length of press
the best so far was a sony dvd writer - almost perfect but for some reason it had same codes for some buttons (play=record, RW=FW) which is really strange..

I do not use harmony's database for htpc. I learned harmony each every command from pocket pc.

Which device on your pocket pc did you use to program
your harmony?

The software on pocket pc has only few buttons for each device. I have to use several devices (about 4 or 5). Most devices can be good recognised by IgorPlugUSB-Receiver. I use Thomson TV, Toshiba TV, Denon DVD, LG VCR, etc.

the best so far was a sony dvd writer - almost perfect
but for some reason it had same codes for some buttons
(play=record, RW=FW) which is really strange..

It also occurs to me, that two buttuns were recognised with same IR-code by IR-Receiver. It's because PC-Software tries to represent VERY LONG IR-sequences with VERY SHORT numbers.
To avoid collisions I've changed the length of IR-Codes in my PC-software from 16 to 24 bit. Check if your driver has the required setting.

Have you tried to control PC with ANY other remote? (I'm sure you have tv or dvd.)

Keep in mind, that your problem has probably nothing to do with harmony, but with pc.

I understand all this..
I am using usb-uirt with girder - there's no option to change the length of codes there.
When I use any remote (but harmony) and watch girder log - it works perfectly. ut of my many remotes i found that aiwa sends the shortest and simplest codes.
So, I went to harmony setup and used an aiwa device as a template for htpc. worked but as with other remotes in harmony database it would do some unpredictable things.
I also reprogrammed a universal remote to aiwa cd player and tried to teach harmony those codes - again, almost success, but not 100% - main issue - when I press a button it sends a different code depending on the length of the press. So, I have to press several times before the right code goes out.
And you're right it only happens with the PC (uirt/girder). All audio/video components work perfectly with Harmony
