Bad batch of 880's at Amazon.com?

A couple of weeks ago, I got 2 880's from Amazon. Both of them had some buttons that didn't do anything. Today I received replacements for them. One of the two is fine, but the other replacement is also defective...different buttons but the same symptom.

Is anyone else seeing this? Is it possible that Amazon got a whole shipment of defective 880's?

PS: Lest you think I'm "blaming the hardware" for a programming problem, the following evidence:
- Some of the bad buttons do work if pushed very hard....I mean hard enough to cause pain, not just firmly.
- If I swap the downloads for the two remotes (which are programmed for different systems), the bad buttons stay with the hardware, not with the programming.
- I can map the function that belongs on a bad button to an LCD button, and that works fine.

So, I am very sure this is bad hardware, but I'm reluctant to keep asking Amazon to exchange, because they may be working from an inventory with manufacturing defects.

Advice? Similar experiences?

I ordered my 880 from amazon.com on Dec. 2, 2006 and it shipped on Dec. 8.

It appears to be working as expected, although I can't say I've pushed every single button on it as of yet. I will do that now and if I find any problems, I will report back.

What buttons were defective? Was it the buttons at the top next to the display, or the number buttons, etc. near the bottom? Or some random combination?

I have exactly the same problem with an 880 I purchased from Amazon. All of the buttons seem to work, but one of the buttons (right arrow just under the LCD) must be pressed very hard. There is fairly wide variation in the pressure required to activate quite a few of the buttons. I can not discern a pattern. It is definitely a hardware problem. I don't know of an option other than to send it back and get a replacement.

I just ordered from amazon (actual vendor hideflifestyle) and have the same issue. The left buttons: stop, record, 1 and 4 do not work unless I press them extremely hard and wiggle the button.

:( Just came in today as well.

Illuminated: To answer your question, each of my 3 bad units has had different bad buttons. In one case, I could get one button to work by pressing very hard, but the one adjacent to it was completely dead. This is obviously a manufacturing problem.

Does anyone from Logitech monitor this forum? It looks like they may have a major situation on their hands.

BTW, Amazon was willing to replace my first two units, but not the third (though they have offered a full refund). From their POV, it makes no sense to keep shipping out replacements, though they somehow need to get the message that it's not a "user error" situation. If others complain, maybe they will see the pattern.

I just received an 880 for Xmas this year and the 0,8 and clear/+ buttons do not work at all.

Reading this thread is starting to get me worried.

Great, I've got a Amazon order for the 880 due to be delivered tomorrow. Well hopefully it won't be one the "recycled" ones returned by you folks.

Question: Does it have to be returned back to Amazon or can it be Warranty replaced directly from Logitech?

My defective unit was purchased at Best Buy and unfortunately my local store was out out of stock with no sure date on receiving any new stock.

I went through Logitech who will first do anything to try to fix it over the phone. They were unable to fix mine so they are sending me a new one within 5-7 days and I then return mine to them once I've received the new one. Unfortunately I have to pay to ship it but it'll only be about 3-5 bucks.

I received an 880 for Christmas that my wife ordered from Amazon (I think she ordered it around 12/4), and so far I have not noticed anything wrong with it. All of the buttons seem to work.

Gluis: I haven't tried warranty replacement with Logitech because Amazon has excellent return policies: they email a prepaid UPS or postal label, and are willing to ship the replacement immediately (2-day) while waiting up to 30 days for the returned item. A classy company that may be stuck with a low-quality product.

I'm pretty sure you can't get a "recycled" unit, in any case. That's illegal unless it's identified as used or refurbished.

I'm still waiting to hear from Amazon wrt their promised investgation of the situation.

Wow. This sounds like a nightmare.

It seems like I am lucky and got one that does not have this problem. I checked every button on the unit by turning off the display with the "glow" button after I pressed each one. All of my buttons definitely work, being pressed with normal force.

My remote came directly from Amazon. If you anyone got theirs from another seller, it would probably be in a different batch.

This is probably not a wide spread issue. From the vendor I talked to, they stated they sell hundreds of this model remote daily and have had a few calls (3-5) with this exact issue.

They are sending me a new one so hopefully my new remote is fine.

Illuminated: Your approach to testing every button using the "glow" button should have been obvious to me, but wasn't; such is the nature of genius! Not only is it convenient, it also rules out any effects from software or settings, which should be helpful in talking to skeptical tech support people.

FWIW, I just got the following email from Amazon. Like many messages originating (apparently) from somewhere on the Indian subcontinent, it's hard to get past the excessive apologies and garbled syntax to tell whether something is really happening, or if it's just meant to be soothing:

Thank you for contacting us again at Amazon.com.

First, please allow me to express my sincere apologies for any
frustration that has been caused. It is certainly not our intention
for our customers to have anything but a pleasant experience at our
store.

Please be assured that all of us here are working very hard to
provide a thorough, personal answer to each of our customers as
quickly as possible.

I have researched our previous correspondence with you, and see that
my colleague is researching on the inventory for "Logitech Harmony
880 Remote Control" to know whether it is safe to order more or not.

Rest assured that she will get back to you within 2 - 3 business
days with a good news for you.

Please note that once the custmer receives the replacement order
defective, it is considered that the problem with the item is more
widespread, and we will not be able to send another replacement. We
investigate and remedy the situation with the item; however, I
cannot guarantee when the error may be fixed.

Another way to see if the buttons work is to look for the little IR/Wireless "wave" icon next to the battery meter. It should pop up when a command is sent.

A Logitech CSR today told me they do (!).
