I have a 659 and use NiMH without problem. Your either have a faulty 659 or you have a loose battery connection problem. Add a thicker piece of foam on the back of the battery door. Also make sure you use the latest Firmware version (4.1 or at least 3.0).

Thanks. :) I have an original Harmony 659 (SST-659), made before Logitech acquired Harmony. Will there be any issues with new firmware with it? Given the hoopla over the new web site interface, I'm kinda reluctant to connect to it to see what firmware I have now. :)

Yes if you were using activity multiple device commands on a single key. You will loose them.

My 550 and two 768s (I think) even my old original 'EasyZapper.com' remotes all work quite well on rechargable NiMH batteries.

Last night the current set in the 550 apparently died and somewhere along the line the remote now boots to 'Safe Mode' Recharge batteries overnight (200ma charge rate, nice & slow) Still, remote boots to 'Safe Mode'.

So I try this trick, pressing the number two button, while powering on (which other threads indicate this how one upgrades the firmware. And it worked a treat.

Thankfully now I do not have to plug into USB, and go spelunking the logitech site for my profile, and most importantly no call to tech support.

around for a while I stumbled across a solution that appears
to work every time. When the remote locks up all I have
to do is take the batteries out, put three fresh batteries
back in, then hold down "2" while replacing the last battery.
No idea why it works, but it does.

Well 5 Months later, and the 550 has caused more consternation.

Come home from mothers day brunch to find the 550 in Xbox Media Center activity. I press activities - nothing happens.
Cycle power - unit boots normally. Except refuses to obey any button push. No change to LCD at all, and never transmits anything.
Swap batteries - nothing
Cycle power & hold down 2 key. - nothing
Fire up pc & update remote via Logitech site - nothing
Cycle power & hold down 2 key - nothing.
Put remote in freezer.
Call wife ask her to pick up alkalines on way home
After finally finding remote - put alkalines in cold remote - nothing.

Arrrghhh!

THWACK! = Me banging remote on coffee table for a little kinetic fine adjustment.

Lo and behold, remote is back to it's normal self.

Think I'll pick up a spare.

Exactly the Same problem here, Jrh.
My 659 was working fine for 1 year with NiMH, and then 2 weeks ago the batteries life dropped drastically. Even with brand new NiMH set, the remote works now for 1 HOUR or two before displaying the "Replace batteries" message. With four new alkalines, it works for a day and then the message "replace batteries" appears. Have updated to the last firmware in safe mode, nothing's changed.
Any ideas ???? Thanks in advance.

The firmware is FUBAR - it's stuck in a loop using battery power. Reload it.

Ive updated the firmware in safe mode for the second time, and I've noticed no change in battery life.
The harmony software give no other choice than updating to the last firwmare version. I can't tell which firmware version it is.

Doesn't matter the version - reloading it should have fixed it if that was the problem. Sounds like a hardware problem.
