I've got a Harmony 688 that I've been using for a few months. It's worked more or less flawlessly during that time. Recently, though, I've had trouble getting the java applet that's installed on the local machine to launch when a new profile is downloaded. I can get through all of the screens, but when it comes time to update the remote, the little java applet never comes up. The same process on another computer that I have works just fine (that's how I've been updating the remote).

I spent almost 90 minutes on the line with Harmony tech support so we've checked all of the obvious (and some not so obvious) things like firewalls, corrupt software, bad USB port/cable, java version, browser (IE or Firefox), etc.

It should be noted that when I plug the remote into the computer it recognizes it because it launches the Harmony website.

I was hoping somebody here might have some ideas.

Thanks!

Have you recently installed Service Pack 2 for Windows XP?
It installs a popup blocker on IE which needs to be overridden for the update to launch. When you click on the "update" link do you see a yellow bar near the top of the web page? If so, click on it to enable popups for the Harmony site.

I appreciate the response. I noticed that when I tried it in IE (used Firefox without problems before this issue appeared). Even if I allow the "popup" (triggers the file download of the Update file), the file downloads successfully and the java applet doesn't launch.

To try to eliminate website problems, I even saved the Update file to my desktop and tried to launch it from there with the Harmony Remote software running (tray icon). That shouldn't require interaction with the web site. No luck. It does nothing. That's when, after uninstalling and reinstalling the software, Harmony support gave up.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

You must go to the control panel and disable the windows firewall in the security settings. Also, you must disable any anti-virus software such as Norton.

Thanks for the suggestion. I use ZoneAlarm for both anti-virus and firewall and have turned it off completely before trying to sync the remote. No luck. My Windows Firewall is off.

I have a similar problem, and find that closing the Harmony Remote Client Software seems to do the trick. You may need to close it from Task Manager as a right click on the Task Bar icon is not always successful.

After I install the Harmony software for a 688, I try to Login on the HarmonyRemote.com web site, but the site just returns me back to the Login page. No firewall, no popups, no AV enabled at the time. Computer recognizes the HID connection and remote. Tech support had me re-boot CPU several times but no joy. At work, I can access my account or create a new one.

Any ideas/suggestions before I request an RMA?

Try clearing all your Temp Internet Files. I had the same problem, worked fine and then no go.. Cleared cache and has worked fine since.

Good luck
