I just bought a used Playstation 2. The unit has an on/off switch on the back of the machine.. only a reset button on the front but it doesn't appear that the reset button can turn it on or off.

I have seen many posts mention how their Harmony remote controls their PS2 (at least turning it on/off) so I am wondering how they do this.

I believe there is an older version of PS2 and the newer SLIM version. I believe I have the older version. Can I not use my 676 to turn this thing on and off?

Thanks,

As far as I know, there is no way to turn the Playstation 2 on and off remotely.

Not the older ones, but the newer ones have IR capability. The key is whether you can buy an accessory IR remote control for it. Or just add the device to your 676 and see if it works.

You can buy accessory remote controls for all PS2 models. But the ones for my model do not include a power-on button. I don't know about the newer, low-profile models.

The newer ones should go into standby mode but I haven't tried it. My daughter has the newer one in her room and the old one is in the home theater.

I called Harmony and asked them. I was told that the Slim version can handle commands from the 676, specifically an on/off command.

But, one could buy a PS2 remote that plugs into the PS2 non-slim version. SOmething plugs into one of the controller ports and supposedly one can control on/off that way.

He said any non-Slim versions made before Dec. 2003 would NOT handle IR signals.

I'm still not 100% clear on this so I am looking to buy a slim version so I KNOW I can use my 676.
