Okay, here is what I have learned through my Harmony 890 purchase. I received my new 890 yesterday 3/1/06. After trying three different computers and all of the USB ports, I could not get my remote to connect properly to anything. I called the second level support 866-826-5722 and tried a bunch of things.
The takeaway I have is that if your remote causes Windows to show a balloon that says "USB device not recognized...", try plugging in the RF receiver unit. Simply unplug the remote and plug in your RF base component (you do not have to plug in the wall adapter). If the Windows balloon at the bottom of the screen pops up and identifies it as a "Harmony..." and says it installed and is ready to use, you have a bad remote unit. He said that even if I could somehow get the new firmware loaded, it would not help the connection problem.
Here comes the "Good and Bad news", as my Logitech helper put it. We will send you out a new remote but it will probably take four weeks or so for you to get it. They have run out of stock. I personally knew I was taking a risk buying it from reading this forum first, but I did not know it would take over a moth to get it working. Bummer.
Bottom line, these things happen. It is the price we pay to have the lastest, coolest things. The remote looks too cool! Much better looking than my MX-500 (that works really well by the way).
I use RemoteCentral so much, I figured I better give a little :)

Just a quick update, Logitech is sending a replacement today. I guess they had some in stock after all.
