I am looking to buy a new CD player. Unfortunately the remote for it (Sony SCD CE595) does not even have an on/off button. Very weird in my opinion but that's what Sony did.

Thus, would it even be possible to programthe 676 to turn this CD player on? I would think not (especially since there's no button to LEARN from) but wanted to verify what you all thought..

Thanks,

That's why I got a JVC to replace my Sony. I use a 659 and it controlled the Sony but I had to get up off my duff and turn it on. Another option may be to turn the Sony on, plug it into a switched outlet on your A/V receiver. I did not do that because of the distance between my player and the receiver. They are on either side on my 61" rear projection.

If the remote does not have a power button, it is likely that the CD player cannot be turned off remotely.

I imagine I could leave it on all the time. I'm just hesitant to do that I guess because I would only use it once a week or so. I do more movie watching and radio listening than CD playing.

I'd hate to waste the electricity keeping it on, but who knows, maybe it only uses a few cents a week.

I have a Sony 5 disk player as well. I have had it plugged into the switched outlet of my Sony AV receiver for the last 6 years, with no harmfull effects.

After all, you need to turn on the receiver anyway to hear your CDs. Just tell your Harmony that the CD player has no power controls, and build your activities normally.

It works perfect for me, and I don't have to leave the CD player powered 24/7.

That sounds doable. But, does the CD player automatically start playing a CD when it is turned on? My old Kenwood CD and receiver was hooked up like you describe. Every time I turned on the receiver, the CD player turned on with it.. Fine. BUT, when it turned on, it automatically started playing a CD which switched my receiver to CD. Thus, EVERYTIME I would turn my receiver on, I would have to hit the CD button, hit stop, then go back to the input I wanted to use. PITA.

But I imagine I could program the 676 to deal with that. Perhaps have it hit stop on the CD player...

Good thing is I haven't bought my new CD player yet and which one I get really isn't that important.

Thanks for the feedback.

In th case of my Sony 5 disk player, the player turns on and automatically discovers the first disk available. After that it will just sit and do nothing.

Likewise my receiver just turns on and waits at the last used input.

My "Listen to CDs" activity selects the proper input on the receiver, and sends the play command to the CD player.

As far as I am concerned, the lack of a power command does not deny me any flexibilty in my programming. The only drawback is that the CD player is on whenever the reciever is on, including Watch TV and Watch DVD activities.

I should add that I programmed the Harmony to send a stop command to the CD player when the activity ends. That prevents the CD player from switching from disk to disk ( making noise) when I am watching a DVD or Teleivision program using the receiver as an amplifier.

Good idea. I was thinking the same thing..
