So i have seen the many posts with the 890 locking up. I am a big harmony fan but would like to know if the 890 issues have been resolved and if it's worth purchasing. I have a need for it but don't want to spend a day debugging. I would appreciate any overall observations from people who actually own one (w/o the overall complaining about what Logitech should have done).

Thanks

The platform is not stable yet.

You may spend *at least* a day getting your remote working...

Depending on your needs, you may be better off with an older (read more reliable) IR remote, and a Xantech repeater.

cheers, mike...

I've returned by Xmas 885 to hold out for the 895.

From what I've read in these forums, the only significant problem has been with the RF extender. This can be resolved with a firmware update.

Go on.... you know you want one!

I got home from a business trip at 10pm and thought ... great... I bet I can set this thing up in 30 minutes (I already had my devices set up on an 880 that I returned a few months ago because the IR could get to the devices...).

Well, about 4 hours of dicking around later I think I've got it working. The software and firmware loads and getting the sw and the remote to recognize the IR extender etc. are a real bitch to get going.

The 'setup guides' are next to useless. The software is flaky.

But when it gets going its pretty nice. I figure if you can hold out, wait a few months and they'll roll the inbox software and firmware and you'll save yourself 1/2 a day in frustration.... but then again, you're on this forum, so you'll get it worked out pretty quick.

One complaint about this remote... the buttons are labelled in tiny font and the back lighting really is awful. It seems like the designers could learn a thing or two from the cell phone guys.

Will the 890 operate my equipment more responsively than the 880?

The remote that came with my PVR is RF. When I do things like skip or channel up/down the PVR reaponds MUCH quicker with it's RF remote than with the 880.

Yes I've adjusted all the 880's delay's to minimum... but it's still MUCH slower.

Good luck getting that firmware to load! There are also issues with the programming download.

The homepage is slow but give it a try. Sometimes I need 2 or 3 triies before the FW can be uploaded to the remote, but it is always safe, the remote cannot be damaged unless you yunplug the thing.

I think all the Harmony remotes suffer from a delay compared with the original remotes or with my MX500 that learned all my commands without problems except for the RC5 ones, that was the reason why i got the HAmony 895. I guess that I have to sacrifice reaction speed for the functionality of the 895. I have tried all the tricks and called support about this issues with most of my equpiment, they could not make it better.
