Hi,
Just joined the forum after a while lurking, gave me a lot of info prior to me buying the SST-745. Glad I did. Have just received the new 768, much better construction and reassuringly weighty I’m not a writer so can’t provide a review as such but, some observations follow. Overall the design is very well executed and the new ‘pearl’ buttons a pleasure to use, I think it will take a while before I can use it in the dark as David suggested in the “Are the buttons backlit” thread. Despite the buttons being different sized and the play and 8 keys having a small ‘nipple’ to aid finding them (unfortunately not in the centre of the button in my unit – it’s on the lower edge) it still needs a glance to confirm where my finger is. I think the power button should have been made more distinctive, either a different shape or made to stand more proud of the surface than it is, it is slightly ‘harder’ in feel so some may find it ok. The scroll wheel is indeed more responsive but seems small in comparison to the 745’s, that’s despite the new model being only one or so inches longer. I like the fact that the display is glass covered (rather than the plastic on the 745), however it’s also recessed which means it could be difficult to keep clean, fag ash in the corners etc. Bottom-line “I like it”, I did consider the Pronto at one point, just for the touch screen aspect. But after holding one I thought it was too ‘retro’ in style and not as substantial as it appeared to look.
