I was looking at the posibility of getting a 688 and had a few questions.

I took their test drive on their site and it appears my models are listed, my question is, can it control on screen TV Guide thing that I have from my Motorla DVR box from my cable company. Most specifically, browsing the listings which another remove I have now won't do. It only allows me to change the channel on the box.

I also have a Yamaha receiver with lots of bells and whistles, will this be able to do things such as changing the different surround options and sound fields, etc?

Hopefully these are too newbieish questions. I poked around on the forum here and did not find them answered elsewhere.

Basically, once the Harmony has turned everything on and gotten it to the right input (which is what it does best), the buttons on the remote are mapped to any button on any of the remotes for your devices - so if the button exists on your Yamaha remote, you can put it somewhere on the Harmony (likely in the LCD screen.)

As for the Motorola guide thing - the database will usually include all known IR commands for a device, including those found on more advanced remotes, so you should be in good shape. You'll just have to try the commands in device mode to see what each does.
