I have done this dvd-player with a friend of mine. I've installed a IR-receiver to it, the problem is that I'm now really willing to buy a remote control. I'd like to build one my self, I was thinking that with some microcontroller it would be possible. Do you have any suggestions? Go check out the project page.

never tried building one, way more fun buying them and then complaining about arrangement of buttons, software..... :-)

I wasn't planning to use any commercial remote control packs, I have a self made IR receiver installed. If there was a commercial made controller that had a cross pad (four directions and ok) plus some (8 or so) separate buttons, I would consider that as an alternative. Of course it should be cool looking (a simplified design product ;) )

Xantech makes a programmable controller called the 590-10 that works off of contact switches. So, you could get a piece of particle board, and put a bunch of contact switches and then label them. The remore would have to be wired though.
