After a couple of years of faithful service my WinCE Nino bit the big one.

Any suggestions from anyone on a new one...Jornada, Cassiopa, Sony Clie or Palm V or IIIx?

You guys are VERY particular about your electronics..I am NOT into games or music (on the PDA), but am in need of heavy document and spreadsheet use and occasional internet.

I am most interested in ease of use, reliability and ability to see the screen outdoors as well as in.

I realize this is not the EXACT forum for this, but I can't think of a group I know better that could help me, so please cut me some slack.

Thanks

I bet GregoriousM suggests "Handspring". Why GM?

I think a winCE (pocket PC) device will be better for you, since it has the pocket office and you know it.

If you want a palm os I find the Visor is better then the palms

Mason: Sorry, but the new iPag's from Compaq are the way to go. See
TOP 5 HANDHELDS
on CNET.

If you really want to, though, you can get a Brother LabelMaker and cover over the Compaq and iPaq logos and call it a HandSpring.

I'd advise the iPaq because of your heavy doc and spreadsheet use. Apparently the screen is slightly duller than the Cassiopeia (spelling?), but is still great, even in bright sunlight. And the reviewer loves the ease of use that Compaq has put into it.

Also, check out TOP 5 HANDHELDS WITH POCKET PC on CNET. They like the Cassiopeia models too.

Let us know what you think!

All,

Thanks for the input. I liked my WinCE device, but I obtained it on clearance for........$149.00. Color, 16MB, CF slot, really cool. Impossible to see in sunlight though.

I'm not sure I want to drop $500.00 just for color and get all the multimedia stuff I will never use on it. If they just had a bare bones model.

Anyway, research has found LOTS of software for Palm OS devices, including some that work great with Word and Excel.

Greg,

I saw in another forum post you made a reference to Handspring, so I ass/u/me'd you were a fan. Like the label maker suggestion though.

I LOVE the PPC's, but the cost....the wife still hasn't recovered from the Pronto I bought in January. (talk about cool!!)

SUPPORT is important. My WinCE was a Philips and they dumped it, zero support.

Will let you all know what I decide.

mason: If you're looking in the PalmOS line, then look at that thread above. (I'm sure you already have). But, I'd wait a few more months. I believe Palm is coming out with units with faster processors. HandSpring has upped the processor speed on their latest unit.

Either way you're a winner. I have a lowly PalmIIIx and wouldn't part with it. It runs my life!

But, I'd probably buy a HandSpring or Sony Clie next time, but who knows what will be out by then.

And you're right. There is tons of software for the Palm at great prices. Lots of spreadsheets that link with Excel and stuff that links with Word.

Yep, let us know what you buy!

Yeah,

I heard that Palm is also going to include some type of expansion slot to compete with the Handsprings and Sony's. BTW, the Sony is cool but WAY overpriced just to get a memory stick slot.

I will have to do something this weekend, as I work out of the office, and I too, live by the PDA. This week has been a pain not knowing when appointments are scheduled, etc. Printing out the forms from the PC daily sucks.

Looking around, the guys at CompUSA seem to favor the Handspring, but there is something about the look that bothers me; I just can't put my finger on it.

On another thought, do you think MS will pull the plug on WinCE as they did the OS on the HK Take Control, or do they have too much market share? According to Smart Computing's PC Today, WinCE had 21% in June '99, but it fell to 10% in June 2000. I have no clue what the HK Take Control had.

What do you think MS can tolerate before they discontinue it?

Oh well..Good weekend all.

Mason: This is strictly an "off the top of my head" opinion, but I think that MS won't pull the plug on "support" for a good while, but won't come up with any upgrades, other than the odd bug patch.

The PocketPC OS is their standard bearer now. It has what CE should have had in the first place.

...... just my 2-bits!

Update:

Bought a Palm IIIxe.

Three main reasons;

Support

Software availability

Price. If something I just can't live without comes along before too long, the palm didn't cost me an arm and a leg.

Thanks for your input guys.
