The only subject I think I am right about is that
user authentication should work better.

OK, here's how it's going to work.

1) If a computer has the NAME cookie set, then everything stays as it is.

2) If a computer does not have a cookie set, then a temporary name/password one will be set that will only last as long as the browser is active (so, for the session only).

3) If a NAME cookie is set and someone enters in another valid name/password set, then a temporary cookie with that information will be set and will last for as long as the browser is active. When they come back to the site, absolutely no cookie will exist (they'll have to set either a new temporary or perminant one).

This is only active in the GENERAL forum for right now (let me know what you think).

Cool.

2) If a computer does not have a cookie set, then
a temporary name/password one will be set that

(so, for the session only).

Can you post under this temp name/password, or is this just a temporary cookie that requires a valid name and password that is already in RC's database? If you can post with a temp name/password that isn't in the database, then it basically nullifies one of the main reasons for having a set name and password namely people being responsible for what they post.

(Personally, I think User Names that include the password i.e. Rhubarb, etc. should be deleted by the webmaster, since that too nullifies the idea of the user being responsible for what they post.)

3) If a NAME cookie is set and someone enters
in another valid name/password set, then a temporary
cookie with that information will be set and will
last for as long as the browser is active. When
they come back to the site, absolutely no cookie
will exist (they'll have to set either a new temporary
or perminant one).

Cool, except for the reservations about temporary names and passwords that I have mentioned above.

See above!

... Greg :-)

P.S. I'm not going to test it out until I get my questions answered since I don't want to lose my cookies! (Pun intended, but information valid.)

Of course this is account based... the temp cookie is only set after the information is validated. I've already disabled the Rhubarb account (getting out of hand).

I've made some further changes, so this is how it is now:

1) If a computer has the NAME (and possibly PASSWORD) cookie set and they post using that account, then everything stays as it is.

2) If a computer does not have any cookie set, then a temporary name/password cookie will be set that will only last as long as the browser is active (so, for the session only).

3) If a NAME (only) cookie is set and someone enters in a new valid name/password set, then a temporary cookie with that information will be set and will last for as long as the browser is active. When they come back to the site, absolutely no cookie will exist (they'll have to set either a new temporary or perminant one).

3) If a NAME and PASSWORD cookie is already set and someone enters in a new valid name/password set, then a perminant cookie with that information will be set.

Why do you not like it to be set, Vixie? Do you want to post little nasties under multiple names?? Huh???
