Lets start a tally of all RC regs that think a new thread should not be submitted in that forum unless the $ symbol appears at least once within the OP...

It seems like such an obvious thing to include what your budget is when asking for advice on what to buy. Why it never seems to happen unless it's requested after the fact is beyond me.

It can't be all that difficult to implement...?....yes/no?

I completely agree. It would be great if we at least had a sticky that said "What to indicate when you post here".

- Budget
- Brief detail of system (type of components)
- Include multi-room control if needed (not after the fact)
- zones, rooms, size of house
- Touchscreen preference
- Hard button preference
- Location of equipment as it relates to the usage area
- control type your looking for (RS232, two way control vs. RF vs IR only)
- Current or previous remote control
- Level of expertise in home theater as it relates to your project
- Desire to program/install system yourself or consider installer?
- Who will be controlling this system (Children, seniors, people in house)
- Eyesight issues
- Any complicated goals you wish to reach (streaming, PC based, etc)
- How you see your system growing in the next 3-5 years

This is a perfect world list, but these are things I need to consider for my new clients when asked for a control system recommendation. More information will always result in a more customized suggestion, otherwise you could easily just read previous posts for an idea.

For some reason people think that if they talk $ up front they will be ripped off.

I have heard DIY guys complain about integrators wanting to start with budget. We start with budget so that we can scale a limitless feature set down to what you can afford.

Client: I want distributed audio in 10 zones, how much?

Integrator: It ranges between $3000 and $3 million.

Theres lots of options in between so its important to know how much you have to spend so that we can give you as many bells and whistles as we can.

Are you guys trying to stir up some trouble or what??   Kidding

I agree that most come into the thread looking for a new remote that will fly the space shuttle and only cost 49.00

There is a saying that many use "The easier you want it, the more it will cost"

Most dont know what they are looking for and offer up litte to no info, which if were stated up front we could narrow down the search and point them in a direction that would suit their needs, Like mentioned above...Budget, IR/RF, existing components and so on.

The Clicker Picker is a great tool but some info is out of date and there are so many more models that arent in there, Im sure there is some time involved to add the new products and remove the old.

There's no worse feeling than that millisecond you're sure you are going to die after leaning your chair back a little too far.

Well that's 4....

I can understand your comment Stamp, but I'm also a little tired of hearing the "Who would spend that much on a remote" rebuttal, when we try to offer advice blind of desired budget.

Maybe just a default range that must be entered...? ...OH...! how about browser cookie enabled by running through the Clicker Picker, which is necessary to start a new thread. All fields filled in the clicker picker will be attached to the bottom of their OP. That way only thread starters need to follow the process...

I agree, I think it could be a good idea if the New thread had sections just to help the user better ask

price range:
equipment:
type preference: buttons - touch screen- both
complexity: pro - DIY advanced -DIY simple
extra info:

Then again it is easy when you don't have to do the work :)

That stuff doesnt work. People will ignore it if they can and type in gobbledygook if they are forced to fill something out when posting.

I participated at computing.net for years and the first response always had to ask "what make and model PC? What operating system?". So the webmaster started adding form boxes and only the forum reg's would fill them out. It was a waste of time and effort.

"Well, I would think that would be obvious, Mr. Customer, someone with alot more money than YOU have."
"You can't fix stupid."

Have you ever ran through the "Clicker Picker" Stamp...?
[Link: remotecentral.com]

The relavent section at the beginning is just drop downs with options. If they choose run through it and not actually fill it out, then it's just an indicator of their intent, and will save regs some time when choosing who to reply to.

I for one, don't see a down side...

£$49.00!!!! Who'd spend that much on a remote?

Think I'm kidding? Check out the "All Other Brands" forum once in a while.

I could care less what DIYs are doing. I sell remote control systems.
I may be schizophrenic, but at least I have each other.

..and I could care less about the opinion of a self absorbed pro. If you don't appreciate the diy crowd, you're on the wrong website dumb ass...

Go to IP and peddle your wares to the only people you're apparently concerned about.

You're what gives the industry a bad name...
