I'm exploring the idea of getting a boat that can be a live-aboard... Anyone here ever try it?

I couldnt stand the thought that my house could sink.

I went on a yacht ride from holland to denmark once. There was a terrible storm that tossed the yacht around and side to side. It was a 2 day ride and i spent it on my back with my feet and shoulders wedging me into place on my bed so i wouldnt get thrown out on the floor. If you got up to go to the bathroom you literally had to crawl there because if you tried to walk you would get thrown to the wall then to the ground. I was so nauseous i didnt eat or drink anything for those 2 days. The entire crew (15 people) including the old timers were experiencing sea sickness. When the weather cleared they found that peices of the boat had been torn off including a door.

Anyhow.. had to share that :). It was scary enough to keep me off a boat for the rest of my life.

WOW! That is quite the story! I was thinking of getting something around 40 to 50 foot, and wouldn't be cruising around much.
I guess I'd have to be careful using my drill on it if I decided to run new wiring!

Your not thinking big enough Mr.Stanley! Have you heard about the guy in mexico that built an island out of plastic bottles? The entire thing is floating on recycled plastic bottles and hes even got plantlife growing on it.

Hahaha! Holy crap! That is amazing! WOW! Maybe I could build a floating foundation from plastic bottle, and styrofoam... and build a little cabin on top of that!

The optimist claims the glass is half full; the pessimist claims it is half empty. An engineer observes that the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

Ps, you can't fix stupid

With Gilligan,
The Skipper, Too.
The Millionaire,
And His Wife.
The Movie Star,
The Professor and Mary,
Here On Gilligan's Isle.

I used to love that show! Did you ever see that episode (my favorite, I think) where they almost got off of the island and then Gilligan did something stupid and screwed it all up? God, that has got to be the best episode ever!

i lived on my boat last summer. it was fine , it was just me. and occasionally the girlfriend would stay. i have a 30 ft cruiser so it was tight. but i also installed a plasma on the dock(i posted pics before) with dvd, hi-def sat and my wii. i also had my grill and my patio furniture and i had my mountain bike... the marina has a ship store and lots of local restaurants deliver to the marina.... and the marina also has boater facilities laundry, showers and i put the WIFI in the marina so i even had internet

but it was also nice to go hoe and sleep in my select comfort bed and use my washer dryer and my shower......

now if i was truely living on a house boat it would have to be at least 80 ft long and 16 feet wide..... we had a 50 footer growing up and it was ok for a weekend but i could not imagine living there full time.

as a retired helicopter rescue swimmer with the coast guard I could tell you some stories, most not good about living on a boat, if you do go through with it find the local coast guard auxillary and take some classes.

Maybe I'll get a classic 1940's era Airstream Camper!
