. . . or has anyone else noticed that the font size in the threads appears to be larger?

Body text has been changed SLIGHTLY from 84% to 86%.

Since browsers have a limited number of actual rendered font sizes (ie. 80-85% looks the same) and the actual range changes depending on a large number of variables, I've determined that this only results in an actual change if:

a) your system is using Normal fonts
b) and you are running IE or Firefox
c) and you are using the "default" font size (16px in Firefox or "medium" in IE)

The reason for this is I had noticed that the rendered difference between my "small" and "normal" fonts in these conditions was almost non-existant (they were very similar). Making small smaller wasn't accessibility friendly (especially with the growing number of high resolution screens), and I felt that making normal larger actually looked a bit better... the font is taller and less "squished" looking, and yet only *slightly* wider (ie maybe a half pixel per character).

I normally use "Large" system fonts (23" 1920x1200 monitor, so things can be small), and I only just noticed what everything looked like at default sizes.

I use Opera and thought I had accidentally hit the + key (Opera will 'zoom' in and out on a page using the + and - keys.) I like the larger font. Makes it a bit easier to read (I found myself zooming in to about 110% to make it a bit easier to follow a thread here.)

I'm not unduly concerned about the change in forum text size, it just looked different and I was wondering if it was just me - or, more accurately, the machine. Having now had it explained I'm happy; it is indeed a little easier to read.

That said, however, have you checked out the files pages? The increase, albeit slight, has had, I feel, a slightly detrimental effect on the the bold italic header; e.g. . . .

Personally I like larger fonts. I don't see why I'd want to squint or press my nose to my high-resolution screen to read text no larger than the fine print on an insurance contract. However, some people are real sticklers about this kind of thing... the smaller the better. It's like it's a point of pride to say you read text three pixels high on your screen!

I think that considering how these so-called browser defaults were developed when the average screen resolution was 640x480 or 800x600 on a 15" monitor (where 100% of the default font size really DID look too big), that 100% these days on a 19" 1280x1024 screen or 1440x800 on a 21" or 1920x1200 on a 24", really is appropriate.

Now, the font "verdana" (as used here) was designed to re-compensate for tiny text sizes on big screens, and looks "bigger" at a particular point size than others like Tahoma or Arial or Times New Roman. So I'd probably end up somewhere around 90-95% if I really wanted to do things my way.

But you're not forced into whatever I choose. I've designed RC to support "flexible" fonts, so if you change the "base" size in your browser (for example, change IE7 "normal" to "smaller" or "larger", or in Firefox/Opera change from 16px to 14px or 20px or whatever) then the entire site's relative text size will change and things should still "flow" properly.

And that's without manually zooming in, which also enlarges the page width, images, etc. I only used fixed font sizes - which can't be adjusted by the user merely by changing the "base" font - in special circumstances where something HAS to be a particular size. Many sites are designed with nothing BUT fixed font sizes, and they drive me nuts (and I'm sure anyone with poor eyesight).

I've changed the font used on the file area titles a bit... I'm sort of getting away from that particular look anyways (that bold italic font used to be everywhere).

Daniel,

Sorry to be a pest. If one changes the font size in a post (which, as you're probably aware, is something I'm apt to do from time to time) is there a means by which one can return to this new default size?

Update:

Problem solved (not sure whether by design or accident) by Damik . . . as you can see.

djy, thanks for asking. I figured I would sort it out some day if I cared, but it was a sudden nice surprise the other day. And the font really is easy to read.

Interesting! And very helpful, even though my glasses still work rather well. Oddly, the "View Code" and "Quote & Reply" are the same size that they used to be.

That's really spiffy.

Now, being the type to push a good thing, can you change the way posts are rendered so that if I copy and paste a tabbed table from Word, or if I create a table using spaces, the text will be rendered in the post just as it was typed in the edit window? An example is Mr. Stanley's response the other day, anal og, which has fourteen spaces between the two parts. It's much funnier in the edit window, and tables can often be helpful.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Yeah...it's definitely bigger, and I'm not sure I like it. It was good the way it was...now it's too big. Too hard to follow the text naturally.

I can change the text size that FF shows by doing Control+Scroll Wheel or View>>Text Size, but I have to do that on every page. If I do it on the main page, it resets itself for each thread and I have to force it smaller on every page. But it seems to be the right size then, although the user information bar on the top is a tad small then.

If there was a way to permanently select the text size for this site only, it'd be good. I'm usually only running 1280x1024 on a 17" screen...so bigger isn't necessarily better.

Well somehow it's staying smaller now when I make it...but it's also smaller on other sites (I'm a frequent tab-switcher).
