Amazon Canada's matches are starting to get pretty wild...

From: Amazon.ca

Dear Amazon.ca Customer,

We've noticed that customers who have purchased or rated Simpsons Comics on Parade by Matt Groening or other books in the Shows > Simpsons category have also purchased The Decline of Sentiment: American Film in the 1920s by Lea Jacobs. For this reason, you might like to know that The Decline of Sentiment: American Film in the 1920s is now available.

OK, exactly HOW MANY comic book readers are there that have also purchased this rather dull sounding non-fiction book about 1920's movies to result in this email?

Dear Amazon.ca Customer,

We've noticed that customers who have purchased or rated Fire Flight : A Novel by John J. Nance have also purchased Ensuring Greater Yellowstone's Future: Choices for Leaders and Citizens by Timothy W. Clark. For this reason, you might like to know that Ensuring Greater Yellowstone's Future: Choices for Leaders and Citizens will be released on May 13, 2008.

Huh? Just because I like fictional stories about planes doesn't mean I also feel like in-depth analysis about national park management and sustainment!

Go on, I'm sure Delia's "How to Cheat at Cooking" would be a wonderful addition to your collection.

I always got the feeling "matches" was more based on paid advertisement then actual matches. i.e. advertisers for X, Y, Z, you bought A and X is closest so they send you X instead of Y and Z even though X is different then A. I never bough from CA, but when they had some good sales on BDs I registered and got some, after that they sent me "matches" that had nothing to do with what I bought and even sometimes for HD DVDs. I bought HD movies, so they must be the same.

I get plenty of emails from Amazon.com (lately I buy most of my stuff there) and so far I haven't had so many wild and completely off-point matches as from .ca...
