OK, WTF is up with every toaster having an arrow and says "one slice". How does the toaster know how many, what direction, or even if there is any toast at all. The whole thing comes on everytime, right?

It can often be attributed to the hair trigger pop up mech.. In the old days they would get way too out of balance if one side was overloaded with a heavy slice and maybe not pop up correctly...

I would guess stupid people an over used legal system.

Same reason bottles of shampoo have “lather, rinse and repeat if needed”, plastic bags have “don’t put over your head and keep away from children” and cup of coffee has “hot” written on it (just to name a few)

Is that an ad? Are you taking orders?

That SINGLE SLICE indicator is not new, so it's not a result of lawsuits. It dates from when kids could climb trees and actually exercise their muscles with nobody worrying about a lawsuit as the result of a pulled or torn ego.

Anyway....

I made up the reason that whatever the hell it is that triggers the toaster to come up is located on that side, so if that side is empty, it will get hot there faster without the bread in it, so pop up before the toast is ready.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I'd be more interested to know why all toasters I've ever had, with the exception of the $19 piece of crap 4-slicer I now have, use a scale from 0 to 10 but 3.14159 is well done, 4 is black, and 10 rivals the sun. My current cheap toaster is set to six and is just great.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Can't get on with toasters. They almost invariably don't take a thick enough slice and I usually need to do 6 slices at a go; two for me, two for the wife and two for the dogs.

Lay the toaster on it's side . . . and don't forget to duck when it "pops".
