The last week in February had a cheap computer go done mother board. Finally put it back together with a new MB this week and one of the rails on the power supply was bad - new power supply. At the beginning of last week my main computer in the office started acting weird. Diagnoses bad power supply that took out the mother board and a hard drive! Got smart on this one and backed up both the Windows and Program Files partitions. Yesterday while I was finishing up the computer got weird when I was shutting it down - got to love Windows - came back up and everything was screwed up. Booted to the USB thumb drive with a bunch of tools on it and in 15 minutes restored both partitions and was back up.

Well I'm back up and running, after a fashion. New graphics card and a crabby old (last resort) 17" crt. It'll do for now though.

Took Freya back to the vet today, supposedly to have that bad tooth removed. Transpired though that it wasn't a bad tooth after all; it was a huge wooden splinter that had worked its way into the gum. That'll teach her to go crunching sticks.

Anyway, she's back home now, feeling a little sorry for herself, but otherwise okay.

Once again the demon gremlins have been at work. Fear not (or do so, as the case might be) I'll be back as soon as possible.

Im out of town wrapping up a system upgrade. I used the clients wifi to download a couple of movies to watch on my iphone during the flight home.

I get back to the hotel (where the internet is psychotically slow) and pull my laptop out and it turns on them shuts off and will not power up. Charger appears to be dead. Im freaking out because i still need to transfer the movies to my iphone and because i have a weeks worth of programming on my desktop that hasnt been backed up. But really im just worried about the movies for the iphone :).

I take the battery in and out in a fit of rage and frustration... all the while im praying and cursing like a nervous madman. Then.. right when i am about to stick a fork in the nearest wall outlet to end it all.. it comes back on.

Had to share that. Thanks for listening. And.. NO you will never be able to get back the 5 minutes of your life you wasted reading this thread :).

Given the odd embarrassing faux pas or three (much to the delight of the daughter) I think I might actually be getting the hang of all this. Indeed, courtesy of wife's laptop (a "gift" from work) I've even dragged myself (or, more accurately, been dragged along) into the 21st century and invested in a wireless modem router (again, much joy and delight from the darling sprogs).

Anyway, having binned the old machine (the numerous hardware/software screw ups finally took its toll) I've now got a new machine that's based around an AMD Phenom II and running Vista Ultimate 64 bit. Not sure of all the pros and cons, but at the moment it appears to running okay (and a period of stability is something I desperately crave). So in that regard, considering all the hullabaloo and problems Vista had when it was originally launched, I think I'll be steering clear of 7 for the foreseeable future.

The quad processor and 64 bit operating system is something i have been lusting after for quite some time. The major road block is that most of the software i run is still 32bit only so the only way to have a machine like that is to use virtual machine software and load XP Pro or a 32 bit version of Vista on it. Meaning i would have to switch back and forth all day.

I have played with windows 7 a little on my bosses laptop. The few minutes i spent with it were pleasurable because of a few new/cool features. My boss says that it is unstable and crashes from time to time so i will be joining you in avoiding windows 7 for a while.

I currently have XP Pro installed and i have no plans to change anything until im forced to buy a new computer.
