Does anyone know how winners are picked for the various contests that abound on web sites? Specifically the ones where you submit your email address. How do they pick winners? Is there a popular program or script that does it?

Anywhere. A friend of mine wants to run a contest on her web site, and I'm looking for methodologies (as well as scripts or programs) to pick winners.

I suppose it depends exactly how the entries are stored.

Can you explain, in general terms, how it works on Remote Central? Or on other sites, if you have an idea how the different systems work...

It depends on how the entries are stored. It's a pretty simple matter to write a program to search through a database of entries and randomly pick a winner. Need more winners? Repeat. :-)

Yeah, it's the random part that's hard. Random is usually not really random, especially if it's seeded on time. Do you have any good shuffle code?

Well, I end up doing everything in Perl, and it has a great random function (basically you just tell it to pick a number between xx and xx).
