sometimes (and sometimes left wing) when we played at lunch time during work but very seldom as a wing. We all ended up playing all positions since we were few and it was a pick-up game (though there was an e-mail list).

Note: not any good at any of them. Like DJY I was never sporty. And if my boss was not the organizer and my friends players I most likely would have never played.

OH, OK.

No, it was not that. A group of us (most in the department) used to eat lunch. One day some had errands and meetings while the rest were going to play soccer. So I decided since it was a nice day and I hate eating by myself that I would go and watch them play. When I went there my boss goes something like “ we don’t allow spectators and you are not good looking enough to be a cheerleader so you either leave or referee” (or at least something like that). So I was there in my regular clothes not knowing the rules and “refereeing”. I noticed two things: everyone was having way too much fun and being a ref is just as much work, so after that I started playing and a bit later even one of the organizers (basically send out e-mail and bring equipment).

Not much in the way of equipment required for soccer; a ball and a few jackets for goalposts. Okay, there was the odd, "That was over the bar," "No it wasn't" argument, but most of the time we just got on with it.

but there was balls, cones and blue jerseys (since often we were not 22+ so we did not play full field)
