Depends on what one construes to be wimpy. Personally, I believe the sheer unpretentiousness of the “Ashes Urn” to be hugely impressive.

Indeed an impressive trophy. But that's all.

Indeed an impressive trophy. But that's all.

what do you mean that's all?

I did some research on it

- small ceramic urn used as a joke filled with ashes (to symbolize the ashes of UK's death of cricket supremacy)
- old silver cup (top part) given to the best hockey team, contains the names of all the players on the winning team (rings that look to have writing on them), at this point when a new ring is added an old one is taken off and kept in the Hockey museum)

- played for by a game UK vs Australia
- played for by many teams and a real competition

- falling apart broken trinket kept in a museum in the UK (not even by the winning nation) so a virtual winning
- Large glorious trophy that has travelled the world. (all the people (players/managers/coaches...) get to keep it for a small amount of time during the summer.

- who knows about the Ashes urn except for guys in UK and Australia
- Stanley cup, who does not know about it ? :)

PS did I say that the Stanley cup is looked upon almost as a religious symbol?

The Football (soccer ) World cup is the ultimate "world cup" more people know about that cup competition than any other in my opinion.more people play the sport around the world and even those countries where soccer is not a major sport enter teams .Even the olymics have soccer and all those teams who enter the olympics know the world cup is the bigger event.

Agree FIFA world cup is most likely the biggest sporting event, but the comparison was between the Stanley Cup and the Ashes Urn.

BTW
1) hockey is also part of the Olympics, and I am sure all of the people playing there can identify the Stanley cup

2) does the world cup even have a trophy (like the urn or the cup)

The original Jules Rimet cup, won outright by Brazil in 1970.

The replacement FIFA trophy

More information about both trophies can be found here. Please note the fact that neither is garishly over ornate.

the picture is right on top :) also it is around 3' tall, the big rings have enough place for the names of around 13 teams worth of players, managers and coaches. Wnen a big ring fills out they remove the top big ring put it in the museum and add a new one at the bottom, so the rings (until someone decides on a redesign is fixed now to the cup (not the original) three increassing rings and 5 big rings)

the people get to keep a ring and a banner is added to the arena
