In the UK when writing a date down we write the day first then the month then the year so today is 12/08/2005.

I have noticed some countries do month then day then year so today would be 08/12/2005

WHY?
Anyone know?

I don't know why but, I've been doing the 'month/day/year' since I was born!

It makes sense to me but then, I'm an American!

If your 'right handed', does that make a 'left handed' person 'wrong handed'?

Glad to see you back! I hope your feeling better!

Best wishes,

Mike

Seven hundred years ago, everybody used the English system. In the Middle Ages you kept to the left for the simple reason that you never knew who you'd meet on the road in those days; you wanted to make sure that a stranger passed on the right so you could go for your sword in case he proved unfriendly.

I prefer to have the oponent on my 'weak' side(left).

It's possible to deliver a far more devistating blow after a full 180 degree 'body swing' than it is with a limited, direct contact jab!

As long as you hit your target ;-)

so both sides are historic and based on what side was needed based on riding horses and useless and meaningless to cars but traditional at the time

if you write out the date completely, how would you write it?

would you say August 12, 2005? So then that became in short hand 08/12/2005

the problem is that it is based on language and so not universal. So for instance here where people grew up and tend to use different languages constantly in can get complicated with the Anglophone way being 08/12/2005 and francophone being 12/08/2005 based on language. That is why many have started using 2005/08/12 since it is obvious it is neither and not based on any language

you missed

teamsters in France and the United States began hauling farm products in big wagons pulled by several pairs of horses. These wagons had no driver's seat; instead the driver sat on the left rear horse, so he could keep his right arm free to lash the team. Since he was sitting on the left, he naturally wanted everybody to pass on the left so he could look down and make sure he kept clear of the oncoming wagon’s wheels. Therefore he kept to the right side of the road.

It's also easier to block a swing from an opponent who is winding up from the opposite side of their body. More time to see it coming, more time to react, more time to defend. This is why a boxer uses a jab to set up their opponent and weaken their defense before delivering the knock blow (usually a right cross for right-handed boxers).

As for the original question... I guess it all depends whether you consider today to be Auguts 12th or the 12th of August. For example:

In English I would say I'm on vacation from August 20th to September 3rd but in Italian I would way "Dal venti agosto al tre settembre" Which is literally translated as "From twenty August to the three september"

I'm not so sure India drives on the left. I get the impression it's more a case of shut your eyes and hope for the best.

By the way I would write the full date as 12th August 2005.
