This doesn't exactly fit any category, but I am looking for a keychain remote for a security gate at my apartment complex. They will only give us enough for those that live here but my girlfriend comes and goes alot and I would like to find one that can be programmed from my original remote. The security gate is a Linear with the megacode system, operating at the 318 frequency. Does anyone have any ideas or places I could look? Many thanks.

I haven't seen any RF learning remotes. It's probably much more technically demanding than IR, less of a market, and perhaps illegal. If anyone could buy such a remote they could simply sit near your gate and wait till someone come by to open it. Their remote would pickup the signal yours sent, and from that point on they'd have access to your "secure" complex.

Offer to PAY for a second one from your apartment manager. It's probably your best bet.

Matt/Dave,

I work in the car audio field. We sell/ install security (read: RF) systems for automobiles. One company does make such a device that actually learns a factory style remote control and retransmit that same frequency to lock/unlock cars w/ factory keyless entry.

The purpose of this is to show consumers how easy it is for a would-be theif to do exactly what Dave was talking about, and to show them that the random code-jumping alarms are a more "secure" system. It only works within a very close range though, (6-8 inches).

They only allow their dealers to have one per store and they are expensive.

Just thought I'd throw that in.

Thanks for your relpies gentlemen. After searching for the last month, I think I might have found one. Smarthome.com sells a keychain remote that will work, but will not work with code-jumping transmitters. But the security gate at my complex does not use that technology. And you are right, the only way for it to "learn" the code is to have the learning remote in close proximity (1-2 inches) of the remote it is to learn.

A metal lid from a 55 gallon drum when thrown under a security gate will open the gate if the system uses a closed loop sensor to open the gate from the inside. In other words, if you drive up and the gate opens, this trick will work.

or follow another vehicle in.

Some security.

I realize your girlfriend won't be carrying any 55 G drum lids. I am just making a point how they sell a security feature to charge you more rent.
