I think S & V is a great publication...if you are a mainstreamer who gets your electronics at the local big box chain store. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that. It's a simple fact. They are great when it comes to catering to the needs of most people, who are not likely to turn to a custom installer for a system or service. Is S & V good at their niche? Yes! Are they biased? Absolutely! Why? Politics and advertising $$$.

If S & V was so interested in putting two remotes head to head, why not the MX-350 or MX-650, which compete in both price and overall specifications with the Harmony model? It seemed to me, by the tone of the article, that they were interested primarily in suppporting one of their advertisers, versus a company who manufactures some of the best low to mid-priced remotes in the world (URC). Want proof? Ok. Who does Crestron hire to build their RF remotes? That's right, URC.

Everything has its trade-offs, if you know the product. I feel S & V abused their power as a respected publication and did the public an injustice with that review.

If you want to have a legitimate comparitive assessment of two like products, get it right and know the products your comparing before jumping in with both feet...or come up out of the cold water without your trunks. ;)

Damon, I did not read the review, so I cannot talk about what they said in it. I also never read any of their magazines so cannot talk about their objectiveness.

now to the heart of the matter

Who does Crestron hire to build their RF remotes?

who would they use Harmony? they don't build RF remotes. On the other hand there was a time when they only offered a Pronto based device (don't know if they still do). Would I have been justified in saying the Pronto is better then the MX-800 because "Who does Crestron hire to build their RF remotes?" that's right Philips.

Everything has its trade-offs

exactly, so maybe there is something about the 880 they like, I don't have one, but I do have other Harmony remotes and they have a good product and even though I have not bought one yet but I am planning to buy one.

I feel S & V abused their power as a respected publication and did the public an injustice with that review.

have you used both remotes? have you used any Harmony remote? If they compared it to the mx-850, and they liked the Harmony better would you be saying the same thing? You say it is a respected publication , then how do you know that what they wrote was not just in their mind. If, on the other hand, you believe they are biased in general "Are they biased? Absolutely! Why? Politics and advertising $$$." then they are not really respectable and then why get PO on this review.

I think remotes are something that cannot be compared head to head in a publication
except if it is IR power/dispersion. It is like writing the horoscope, can everyone that was born under a particular sign from a new born to a 90 year old be having the same type of day? We all have tastes, needs and wants. any comparison of two remotes where one is picked as a winner, will just look at the tastes, needs and wants of that reviewer. If you want a good review of remotes, read Daniel's reviews. I find them unbiased and that he goes into great lengths for every detail of each remote, in their strength and weaknesses, and lets you decide if X is better then Y

I have a Pronto for my media room and a Harmony
880 for my living room - which has more components
than my media room. The Harmony is so much easier
and quicker to program - amd it remembers the
state each component is in. Hands down, the winner.

This is a well thought out statement of preference and why - spoken from experience.

The URC-300, according to S&V, despite it's good
features such as a touch screen (which I actually
think is a bad feature because nothing beats tactile
feedback, but hey, when you don't know any better,
touch screens do look cool *sarcastic*)

This, I think was slapped - and rightly so - where you said:

but it is blanket statements like "TS is bad"
that I consider naive and dumb. The problem is
that you will never see anyone that loves their
TS remote say PB remotes are bad and anyone that
cares for his guests would want a TS remote with
intelligible labels, but it looks like every so
often you need to get a PB lover say TS is bad
because you need to look at the remote 24/7.

end of defense/soapbox :)
