Does anyone know of a computer program that I can use to catalog my growing DVD library. I don't mean a database program like Access either. I would like a specific program written to do this. Thanks.

I use DVD Profiler. I highly recommend it. Not only is it terrific as a catalog tool, but it can run reports (I run my wishlist report every Tuesday before I go to Best Buy), you can publish your collection online with it ([Link: dvdprofiler.com]), and it works with the free Radio Shack cuecat bar code scanner. So the startup effort to get your collection into it is relatively painless. Oh yeah, one of the biggest advantages...DVD Profiler is free.

If any profiler users out there need help with the cuecat scanner, let me know. I have some notes I can post on how to set it up with DVD Profiler. Since Radio Shack gives them out for free, go get one. Just don't install the software the comes with it (it's spyware).

The DVD Profiler guys are working on a CD Profiler application. They've already registered the cdprofiler domain, but other than that, they haven't commented on any progress they've made with the cd app.

Andrea,
Thanks for the information. It was the scanner feature that really appealed to me. I wouldn't even want to think about entering my CD collection by hand.

For CD's here is what I use....

[Link: fnprg.com]

Has a batch scanning mode, all you do is put your cd in your drive, it reads the disk ID, and opens the cd drawer, allowing you to place in the next cd. Just switch cd's and push the drawer closed. The whole process then starts over again. When finished with the cd's, just have the program download all the information from CDDB. Has a ton of features, and really good support from the author.

Personally I like the programs at

http://www.collectorz.com

The movie collector program is really good, you just type in the movie name, and it links to the Internet Movie Database to get things like running time, movie credits, etc. This is more for general movie collecting as it's good for cataloging both DVD's and VHS, the only flaw I find is that it can't pull in the movie release year automatically, you have to type this in yourself.

They also have a similar program for CD's and MP3's.

I used the collectorz programs a while ago, and didn't like them.. I just looked over them again, and it looks like they updated them a bunch. I may have to try again. I honestly don't remember why I quit using them, though.

I've had a request for CueCat notes/info, so I thought I would post here in case anyone else is interested.

Do not install or register the software that comes with the CueCat (it's spyware). The Digital Convergence (company behind the CueCat giveaway) software transmits the serial number of your CueCat along with what you scan, to their database for spying ("target marketing") on you. They've got your name and your serial number if you register and use their software. There's a raging debate elsewhere regarding their "cease and desist" letters to authors of programs like CatNip. Here are 2 links with more info if you're curious about that:

[Link: nc.flyingbuttmonkeys.com]
[Link: cuecatastrophe.com]

These 3rd party programs (like CatNip) circumvent Digital Convergence's ability to track your use of the CueCat, and thus, their ability to collect revenue from selling that information about you.

Download the free CatNip software from:

[Link: goldsteinsoftware.com]

To use CatNip with DVD Profiler:

1. "CatNip Settings" screen:
Output Type: Data
Output (.[Period]) Output (Return)

2. "CatNip Profiles" screen:
a. Create a new profile: DVD Profiler
b. Scan Type: UPA
c. Filter: -++++++++++-
d. Leave "Command" blank, click on "Save Scan"

3. Start DVD Profiler, add a DVD. With the cursor in the UPC entry field, scan the UPC with the CueCat.

If you change the right hand "Output" field from (Return) to (None) then the proper code will be entered and you can manually press "Enter". Some prefer to let CatNip automatically send the (Return) code.

Linux drivers, Perl decoder, and great links (like how to "declaw" your CueCat) at:

Great information on how the CueCat works (and pictures of the internals), as well as info on physical modifications you can make to it at:
