I'm a victim of the lip-sync problem on my new player. I called Sony Customer Support and they were unfamiliar with the problem.
Now I hear that it is a known problem! Does anyone know if there is a fix in place or who to contact about a fix?

Thanks!

No fix that I know of. Audioreview.com has post from many who have lip sync problem with the Sony. I had it. Returned it for the Toshiba 3109.

It depends on who you talk to at Sony. Some will act like they've never heard of a problem with their DVD, others acknowledge it.

Their advice was to hit the stop button and then play again.

OK, just going by what info I've been collecting on the newsgroups (which can be an innacurate place):

The fix involves a chip replacement. There are no plans for a recall. They will begin shipping "fixed" units when the old ones run out. I am uncertain of how -- or if -- existing players can be upgraded.

Are you using an outboard D/A converter, or is the problem with the D/A in the Sony?

Here's an update: I returned the unit and exchanged it for a current model (the "old" one was a purchased a month ago. I played the new version of "Aliens" and sure enough: it got out of sync. I called Sony and asked them straight out about the lip-sync problem. They looked it up and there was no fix yet. "Maybe in the next month". No details. That was the last straw. I exchanged it for a Toshiba 3109. Works great.

Just noticed the problem in my new DVPS530. I changed the DVD and the delay dissapeared. Has Sony owned up to the problem yet? Are they going to offer warranty repair??

Hold on to your reigns. Even though I am not very partial to Sony audio, it's not just Sony with the lip sync problem. I own a older Pioneer DV505 and I have the same problems you mention with your Sony's. I was at a repair shop talking to one of the repair men about the problem. He was very aware of the lip sync problem. Maybe the companies were using the same chip you mentioned that needed replaced and now newer generations are using a different one. Anyway be carefull calling Sony tech support. Its costing you $2.00 per minute. If you can believe it.

it's not the makers of the dvd players (sony, pioneer etc.) that are at fault, it's the disc manufacturers. let me put it this way........if it was a problem with the machines then all dvd discs should have at least some problems with lip sync , but thats not the case, its only a select few discs.
i have a pioneer 515 and haven't experienced major problems with it anyway!
thats my 2 cents worth.

Well, your theory works both ways: If it was a problem with the disc, then all DVD players would have the same problem.

It's strange that a new copy of "Aliens" should exhibit the problem, and it did occur on other discs, including "Enemy Of The State". I'm sure it's some sort of buffering problem, but the problem does exist, however occasional, and Sony is still shipping their product blaming it on the disc and not handling the problem as they should. The problem seems to be discs alright, but certain disks played on THEIR players!
Meanwhile, they will just keep shipping, selling and service stone-walling.
I have heard enough about other Sony equipment horrors that I know I will never buy SONY again in the future. I want to spend my money on a product I know will perform as touted.

Last word: The Toshiba 3109 I purchased has been playing all disks flawlessly. I like the picture better too...

I had this problem with some chick flick (I forgot which one), but the rest are okay... I'll check out Enemy of the state sometime... I, too, have the Sony player

I finally called Sony after getting NO response from their online help(less) desk. They are owning up to the problem and are providing warranty repair at the Service Centers. My player is going in tomorrow!!

Has anyone noticed this problem on the 7700?

Sometimes I think I do, but sometimes I think I'm just nuts!

Before, I do have this problem on my DVP-7700. But since I've upgraded the firmware of my amplifier's (E9000ES) firmware to V1.10C, I don't anymore. I don't know what happened but my problem on my DVD player was fixed by the upgrade on my amplifier.
