Can anyone tell me how to charge the region code for this player. Ideally, I'd like to make it region free. I think there is a button on the remote and then you press the button zero. But that button is usually a secret. Anyone have an idea on how to do this?

Well it can be done but not with Region 1 Units, you will generally need to have a Pronto, One4All or Harmony in order to make the unit region free.

This works with a Pronto remote, use ProntoEdit for the codes...

- Program individual hex-code (below) into five chosen buttons
- Put your DVD-player to standby mode (main power on and red light
above it)
- Push programmed buttons sequentially from one to five (the player
starts up)
- Do it again: Push programmed buttons sequentially from one to five
(the player goes back to standby)

The player should now be multiregion!

With the DVD player in standby. Press button 1 -> 5 twice in turn e.g. 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5. If it has worked the DVD player will switch on and show "SUCCESS" on the display. Repeat this again and the DVD player will revert to standby.

ONE FOR ALL remote (URC-7562)
Use the Key Magic instructions on last page of the remote manual.
1)Put SONY DVD player in standby mode with red light on
2)Type DVD Key on the One for all remote
3)Type and hold Magic Key until two blinks then type 994
4)type Magic key
5)Then type 189 and 1 on the remote (to assign function 189 to the "1" Key)you see two blinks
6)repeat steps 3 and 4
7)Then type 255 and 2 on the remote (to assign function 255 to the "2" Key)you see two blinks
8)repeat steps 3 and 4
9)Then type 095 and 3 on the remote (to assign function 095 to the "3" Key)you see two blinks
10)repeat steps 3 and 4
11)Then type 221 and 4 on the remote (to assign function 221 to the "4" Key)you see two blinks
12)repeat steps 3 and 4
13)Then type 079 and 5 on the remote (to assign function 079 to the "5" Key) you see two blinks
NOW COMES THE FUN PART
Your plauer in standby mode use the One for all remote
Type keys 1 2 3 4 5 in sequence
Player displays SUCCESS in the blue display and the player comes on
Type keys 1 2 3 4 5 in sequence and the player goes off.

WOW! Thanks for this information. It's really more involved than I ever thought. My DVD recorder was purchased in Europe, which I think makes it Region 2 (but I might be wrong). Will that make a difference?

The information i gave will work on any non region 1 units. Where i live we are fortunate for the manufacturers to do that for us so we get region free dvd out the box.

I live in Europe. But I don't think that this is a region free area.
