I have a client that wants to upgrade their system which consists of a component switching Yamaha receiver, a progressive scan DVD player, and an HD cable box. This system is connected to a 720p DLP projector with no HDMI inputs. I installed this system 3 years ago. This client wants to install a blu-ray player. One question I have is this: Can a blu-ray player output 1080i thru its component output? The Sony model I want to use says it can in its manual. The more specific question is this: Will the blu-ray player playback material from a blu-ray disc thru its component output OR will the disc itself limit the output to 480p?? I do know that the player will not up-convert through the component output.
If the player will not output Blu-ray material via component, there is an HDMI to component converter made by ExtenHD. The model number is X-CONYUV. Has anyone here heard of this unit or used it?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, all current BD players will output 1080i via component. I'm pretty sure that many will output upconverted DVDs in 1080i via component as well (although normal DVD upconverters won't - silly really). You won't, naturally, get 1080p via component.
The catch is the "image constraint token". This will be implemented on future BDs (2012) and will limit component output to an effective 960x540 resolution.
