In the process of building a new home and trying to decide on a media manager for a dedicated home theater. I like the layout of the escient fireball allowing you to select a dvd from the screen based on genre/whatever. Are there other products like this one, currently I have dvd titles programmed into a pronto tsu3000 but would prefer to search on screen for a more wow effect, besides the number of dvds is out growing the pronto memory. Also interested in home automation and found a "control 4" unit that appeared to do the same type thing, which would possibly get 2 birds with one stone? Any input or experiences would help, thanks in advance.

The CCA can make their amendments to the license agreements but that has nothing to do with them being able to enforce them. Kaleidescape has already litigated and won with regard to the terms of the CSS license. I'm sure they will not back down again and the area of "fair use" has not yet even been addressed. Litigation by the movie studios has never addressed "fair use". The lawsuits that shut down 321 in San Francisco federal court were never about "fair use". Litigation has only been focused on the DMCA's unlawfullness of circumventing devices. It is my understanding that congress is also revisiting the DMCA with regard to the language of creating, owning and or using a program or device to circumvent encryption. If the DMCA is amended to eliminate or lessen this restriction then the battle will only be on "fair use". IMHO, the courts at trial or appeal will favor the consumer (not the pirate) for "fair use".

Another way is to stick a PC in the rack, and use do what I'm doing. See this thread: [Link: remotecentral.com]The folks at AVSFORUM.COM also have a few suggestions other than those mentioned above. Just be sure that you get a good reliable hard drive (raid array) and make a backup every time you add another DVD. My external USB hard drive gave me some temporary grief today when the PC wouldn't find it. Had to reboot and swap it to another USB input. Now I'm backing it up to another identical drive just for redundancy.
