Using the method described on this site, I tried to assemble a PS3 Remote with IR capability.

I made the mistake of ordering a Sony PS2 with IR Receiver from eBay (Hong Kong) - the included disc is PAL and will not play on my US PS3.

What the heck do I do now?

Disc? You don't need a disc for anything...

My problem is that the remote will NOT control the PS3. I have the Radio Shack USB to PS2 adapter plugged into the first USB port on the front of the PS3, the Sony IR Receiver is plugged into the adapter, and the Sony Remote will not function.

Am I doing something wrong? I thought I needed to load the disc to make the PS3 recognize the IR remote/receiver.

Is there a problem since the remote is from Hong Kong - maybe designed for a PAL PS3, not an NTSC version??

The remote will ONLY work while in the Blu-Ray/DVD player, and even then only several buttons. Otherwise, the only thing that comes to mind is that the remote and IR receiver may not be a match for each other (did you buy it new?)

I went out and bought the odd and ends that are needed to make my PS3 IR friendly with my HTM MX-500 learning remote. Everything worked according to the plan EXCEPT the MX-500 refuses to learn the arrow keys. I've tried over and over and I've also tried learning them to various points on the MX-500...

Any thoughts as to what the issue might be?

I seem to be unable to get this to work...

I ordered a remote control off eBay (sent from Hong Kong) and it's not working. My remote is part #scph-10420, and the IR receiver is scph-10160.

I get nothing in any screens...no indication that it's working at all.

Not only that, but when I plug in the USB adapter, my bluetooth controller stops working.

Any suggestions? I don't have the exact remote that was mentioned in the article...does it only work with that specific model?

The SCPH-10420 is the remote sold for newer PS2s with the IR receiver built-in (the package does not come with the SCPH-10160 IR receiver). Apparantly the OLD remote is compatible with newer consoles (minus a few new functions only on the new remote), but going on your experience along with a few other people's I'm going to have to guess that the reverse may not be true - perhaps the SCPH-10420 is simply not compatible with the old IR receiver.

Hey JasonBergman - You might want to checkout this theard as I had the same problem with the cable locking out the controllers as you have.

Daniel -- or anybody -- can I get a definitive answer to this:

I bought a Sony SCPH-10174 thru e-Bay. Items look new except IR receiver portion is scuffed & any original peel-off plastic isn't there. Blister-pack certainly appeared new & impenetrable. The remote is a SCPH-10420. The IR receiver is a SCPH-10160. These two items are what's included inside the blister-pack of the SCPH-10174.

The contraption as assembled in Daniel's article doesn't work.

What I can't figure out is whether Daniel is stating above that the 10420 / 10160 combo is a definite mismatch. If so, what's the model of the remote in the 10172 combo listed in Daniel's original article? i.e which exact combo of SCPH's do I need?

Or is it that my 10160 is defective (or maybe my 10420)...and I should get right over to Game Stop or EB Games to buy more used parts & try again.

FYI I'm using a Radio Shack 26-729 PSX-to-USB Adapter; the PS3 came out of the box w/ 1.50, now it's current at 1.80.

In any case, the 10420 remote doesn't work as described in the article -- nothing's happening.

Next step should be?

Thanks

I have the SCPH-10172 package, which includes the SCPH-10150 remote and SCPH-10160 IR receiver. From all reports, the SCPH-10174 package that you have, which you say includes the SCPH-10420 remote, does NOT work with the PS3.

This is probably a remote problem (doesn't send out "controller compatible" codes) and not an IR receiver problem, so if you have a computer programmable remote like a Pronto or an MX-700 you may be able to get codes to work through it.

Otherwise, Logic3 has a new solution on the horizon, the PS916, which is a USB-key sized IR receiver and a simple remote designed for the PS3. However so far it's only mentioned on the company's UK site and I haven't seen it for sale anywhere. Also note that it offers no additional functionality over the current solution.

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the clarification. I've used your v1.5 PS3 IR codes in my TSU3500, and have pointed the Pronto at the SCPH-10160, which is plugged into the RS 26-729. I do see a blink-back on (another) IR sensor, so I'll assume that your PS3 codes are spitting out a proper signal. Still -- no dice. PS3 doesn't respond at all.

I'm completely new to the PS -- there doesn't appear to be anything I have to *do* in the PS3 menu to get the PS3 to see the 26-729, right? Just plug the 10160 into the RS, and then plug that into any of the 4 USB ports, then it should be plug'n'play, right?

Any thoughts? Anybody?

I really don't want to invest in (another) SCPH-10172 package, just to get the 10160 inside it, just on the hunch that my current 10160 is the "defective" problem. Unless that *is* the problem, of course...in which case I'd do it in a second.

I REALLY want my Pronto to control this freakin' PS3!

Did you get the MX-500 issue resolved? I'm looking to use my MX-500 for a PS3.

Has anyone tried controlling via RS232? i.e. using a RS232 to USB adapter (if the PS3 does not have a COM port). This would be my prefered setup when I get my PS3 shortly. This will be connected to one of the RS232 ports from my Philips Pronto 9600 extender.
