My wife and I laugh when watching films on DVD as it seems that every single title has, at some point, a strange, odd or clumsy pause or skip in playback. Are we nuts or is everyone else aware of it? What is it?

It's the layer change on dual-layer discs, where the laser has to refocus from the first to the second layer.
Many of the more expensive players - and ironically many no-name cheap ones too - have a buffer to prevent this pause.
