I just saw the box for the new release 'Saw', recent serial killer movie. It is billed as a widescreen version. I assumed this meant it was at the original theatrical release of 1.85:1 or 2.35:1. But no. It is "optimized" for a 16:9 widescreen HDTV.
Have there been other movies released like this? I want to see the original aspect ration, whether I have to see letter boxing or not. Why are studios doing this in the first place. This is no better than pan and scan "fullscreen" versions. Are these movies available in the original aspect ratio? Just curious.

If it says optimized, that usually means it is anamorphic, not that it has been adjusted to 1.78:1 (16:9) from OAR. I haven't seen it in person, but on the web it looks like it says 1.85:1.
