I recently tried watching Top Gun (2.35:1) on my widescreen tv and no matter what I did the picture is not the correct aspect ratio when trying to view it widescreen mode.

The DVD has both "standard" and "widescreen" options in the Video setup menu. Using widescreen on the DVD and standard widescreen mode on my RPTV I get black bars at the top and bottom (expected) but the picture is stretched horizontally. If I switch the TV to 4:3 aspect ratio the picture looks correct but now I get black bars on top and bottom AND grey bars on the side (lots of wasted space).

If I use the "standard" option on the DVD and widescreen on the TV the picture is again stretched (expected) but there are no black bars. If I switch the TV to 4:3 mode the picture looks correct but again I get the grey bars. Still, this picture results in the biggest picture and would make for the best viewing. However, I want to watch it widescreen mode. What is the deal with this DVD or what am I doing wrong?

The Top Gun DVD is 2.35:1 but it's non-anomorphic so you will have to use a different strech mode for it than you do for most DVDs. The stretch mode that you're looking for is the one that stretches the picture vertically without stretching horizontally.

You should select widescreen on the DVD's menu. The name of the stretch mode on your TV will depend on the brand TV that you have. What are the various stretch modes on your TV? The correct one is called "Expand" on Mitsubishi TVs.

The only format options for 480p signals on the Mits 65611 is narrow and standard. Narrow will produce a 1:33 ratio and standard is for all others.

I do have expand and many others formats for 480i signals. Should I be letting the TV do the up converting instead of the DVD player?

My 55819 offers Expand even in 480p mode. Neither Narrow nor Standard will give you want you want.

If your DVD player offers a stretch mode that will stretch vertically but not horizontally then you can use that. My DVD player, the Panny XP30, does not. You'd use the DVD players stretch mode and leave the TV in Standard.

Your other option is to put the DVD into interlaced mode and use the TV's Expand stretch mode.

Depending on your DVD and TV, the TV may do a better job of up-converting. All depends on the equipment. At any rate, the lack of a "zoom" mode for non-anamorphic widescreen DVDs would have me put in interlaced mode. :-)
