Ok, not *really*, but good enough for me -- and I thought you all might be able to use this method:
Since the Dish only has the ON/OFF code, I needed a way to have a 'definite' ON and 'definite' OFF. I found one -- read on...
Although not the cleanest solution, the trick involves using the 'Sys Info' code. What you'll find is this:
1. The 'Sys Info' button ALWAYS works, even if the box is turned off (provided you do *not* turn the box off on the front panel, which performs a reboot).
2. As it turns out, if you press 'Sys Info' while the unit is OFF, and then while the sys info screen is up press the 'Power' button on the remote, the sys info screen will go away. The unit will *not* power ON.
3. If you press Sys Info while the unit is ON and then press power button, the unit will power OFF.
So, a macro for power OFF would be:
'Sys Info', Delay, 'Power'
and a Macro for Power ON would be:
'Sys Info', Delay, 'Power', Delay, 'Power'.
I know its not pretty, but it works for my automated setup with my HTPC and UIRT.

I programmed Sys Info, Off and On to my parents MX-500 LCD screen and then tried your macro hint, Jon, and it didn't work.
Where did you add them?

Can someone post the code for the Sys Info command on remote address 1 and remote address 10?

Maybe you found a solution to how to switch between HDTV and non-HDTV? Right now, whatever it is on, when you click on it, it will switch back and forth. I need a way (and I assume that everybody else that has it) to control to switch to HDTV when I watch HBO HDTV, and switch it to non-HDTV, when I watch everything else. Did you try to do that?

Andrea,
Try this for address 10:
0000 0048 0001 0011 0017 0163 0017 0062 0016 00a3 0017 00a3 0016 0062 0017 00a3 0016 00a3 0017 0062 0017 00a3 0016 00a3 0017 0062 0016 00a3 0017 00a3 0016 00a3 0017 00a3 0017 00a3 0016 00a3 0017 0163
Halpee: I see no way to do this without some type of programming (not available in the Pronto). You could create a macro to take you to HBO and then one out of HBO, but it's just as easy to simply hit the "sd/hd" button.

Azistoohot,
I believe the sys info code only works on OpenTV receivers (3900, 4900, Dish 301 and DishPVR). This is why I can't get it to work (on address 1 or address 10) on my two 5000 receivers. But thanks.

You may want to check your OpenTV recievers again. Mine was working up till yesterday. I think they upgraded the software for the "Dish Home" Channel(Channel #100 for me). Now this great work around doesn't work any more. :( I'm going back to leaving it on all the time again.

I had the same experience as MCaruso. Just got back from an extended road trip, plopped down in front of the set, hit the dish on button on my Pronto, and nothing happened. Experimenting, I found that pressing Sys Info on the factory remote no longer brings up the Sys Info screen if the box is off. As a result, no more fake discrete codes.
Like MCaruso, this happened to me at the same time I got the "Dish Home" channel. This makes me wonder - if the dish folks can change the way the box responds to a IR command in the "off" mode, what else can they change? Add a new IR command, like a discrete on/off?
I'm going to write them a letter asking them to either add discrete codes next time they change the programing, or at least restore the Sys Info behaviour back the way it was.

My 501 just got P165 yesterday. This included the @Home stuff (channel 100). The discrete on workaround using the sysinfo command still works for me.
