I have the GR-DV500 camcorder and RM-V718U remote, but I think all the JVC DV camcorders use the same remote codes.

I'd like to find IR commands not included in the orriginal remote (especially commands for the camcorder's menu system), and I'd like to find out if the optional RM-V700U remote has any extra commands beyond those listed below.

Eventually, I'll get around to trying all 256 possible commands to see if I can figure out what they do, but this is particularly difficult in a camcorder with many different modes where a typical command is live in only one of those many modes and commands are likely to do things that aren't easily visible in testing.

I found a ccf for the DVL9600 camcorder at
[Link: remotecentral.com]

That matched all the codes I decoded from my remote, plus 4 more codes (marked with * below) including two that the (very confusing) JVC documentation seems to say are on the optional remote.

All the codes are JVC protocol, device 211. Here are the command numbers and functions. Again, I'd appreciate any info (in any form: CCF, CML, EFC, hex, etc.) about any that I don't have here:

3 STOP
5 Slow<|
6 FFWD
7 REW
8 Slow|>
12 Play
13 Pause
23 Audio
47 Display
76 A.Dub Play
77 A.Dub Pause
81 Zoom W
82 Zoom T
88 Fade *
89 Start/stop
93 Snap Shot
103 On/Off *
104 In/Out *
105 Cancel *
141 Insert Pause
151 up
152 down
153 right
154 left

John,

I looked at the LIRC database, Promise Systems database, HP48 database and didn't find any new ones. Only the LIRC database even had any thing for the JVC camcorder. I have a generic collection of commands for JVC VCR's (the transport commands you posted are consistent although with the camcorder device number.)

Since this is a digital recorder, you might look at the high end HD digital VCR's made by JVC.

It might give you some hints about promising command numbers. Other than that, you are probably the best equipped guy in the world to figure this out, since you wrote just about every decoding/encoding tool that I use ;-)

I wrote a better search protocol for JVC, so testing 256 codes takes 308 keystrokes (if done perfectly) instead of the 1024 keystrokes it would take by EFCs, and mistakes and retests (imperfect testing) is similarly improved.

I tried all 256 commands in a paused_camera_menu mode, many of the commands I tried on many different menus and some other modes (very tedious, even with the faster test protocol and it's still just a tiny fraction of testing).

I found three discrete off functions, and a function that turns off listening to remotes (matching and visibly changing the menu setting for that), and the reset command (seems to match camera reset from the menu), and several other commands that seem to turn off individual special features. I didn't find an On command (nor On/Off toggle) nor the menu command, nor any usable command to turn on any special feature.

A bunch of commands seem to turn on a special feature as long as the IR signal is being sent and turn it back off the moment the IR signal is released. Similarly, the commands that match rolling the menu wheel up and down roll it one stop on press and another on release, so you always go by two's. (The menu wheel function is useless if I can't find the menu activate function.)

I don't think my protocol is doing something wrong on button release. I plan to experiment with changing the function number in the middle of the IR repeat to see if that changes the release problems. Do you have any ideas about that? (I've already tried sending just a single frame and still get the double action, so near as I understand it: one frame or hundreds or anything in between still acts like exactly two actions).

I did check in playback mode and the OBC for Play (with my test protocol) acts like just one press of the play button (zoom, wide, rew, etc. all work as expected but are the sorts of functions where an extra "press" on release wouldn't be obvious.

John,

On the double command issue, are you using the built in JVC protocol? If so, maybe what we call JVC1 is all the IR receiver is looking for on certain commands and the JVC2 segment looks like a second command. Can you modify Tommy's software a bit to capture the OEM remote signal each frame at a time?

That assumes that there is a Menu wheel on the OEM remote as opposed to the camcorder itself.

I actually forgot about the JVC1/JVC2 issue. I THINK when I tried patching the protocol I made it send a single frame, which would be just JVC1, but I'll need to check with Tommy's software to see what my protocol is really sending.

The OEM remote has no menu functions at all. If it had, I would certainly figure out how to duplicate exactly what they sent rather than semi-randomly searching for the right commands.

I've had no trouble with the SnapShot command nor the Zoom Commands in camera_pause mode, using either the initial or single frame patched version of the protocol. I don't know the camera well enough to know what other OEM remote functions are even supposed to be usable in camera_pause mode.

Most of the OEM remote commands are documented primarily for how they are used in audio dubbing. I have no clue how to do any of that (and the documentation doesn't help), but I think I don't even want to. I hope to be able to do all editing on a PC after transferring with the DV cable (something I haven't had time to try yet with this camcorder). I hope I never have any need to attempt any editing on the camcorder itself.

I want the camcoder remote primarily for better operation of the camcorder on a tripod. Even if I'm at the camcoder, its buttons are hard to operate and impossible for me to operate without shaking the whole tripod. It would be great to be able to turn on and off some of the special features (wide mode, AGC modes, backlight etc.) from the remote. When setting up a group shot that I'm in, it would be great to be able to deal with the camcorder's timed shutoff via the remote rather than walking back to the camcorder to close and reopen the viewfinder to turn it back on (timed shutoff is when you leave it paused too long while trying to set up the shot).

I'd also like some of the advanced playback functions (such as blank search) on the remote. I assume I'll have no trouble with the basic play, pause etc funtions which are on the OEM remote and as you mentioned are generic JVC VCR commands with the device number changed.
