Looking for one for the few times a year I need to do it. Need to save the codes to hex format for importing into URC, RTI etc.

The RTI is a good one, and a couple are currently on ebay. IR-PRO.

For a bargain, get a Pronto 1000 or 2000, or an Onkyo CHAD and use it as a learner with Pronto software (can be found here on RC).

I have a Pronto but its a pain to use. Might have to break down and pickup a RTI from my distributor.

At this point I am not sure. There were some firmware issues with IrToy when used with IrScrutinizer but they may have been resolved.
Best to ask Bengt Martensson aka "Barf", the author IrScruntinizer, over on the JP1 forum:

He says this about the IrToy in his IrScrutinizer documentation "The ending timeout for receive is 1.4 seconds, and cannot be changed. This is not optimal for most IR signal capture use cases."
But this may or may not still be the case so probably best to ask him.

The IrToy is a good piece of hardware, The 1.4 seconds delay is an annoyance, no more, no less. Your brain tends to go "I just pressed a button, why did not anything happen?.... Oh, now it shows up". Confusing, but you will get used to it. Use the IrToy firmware 2.2 (or the inofficial "2.4").

On my "wishlist" is to port my firmware to the IrToy [Link: github.com] ...

I dug out my IrToyv2 yesterday and updated it to 2.2 to compare it to my Girs client. I tested a couple of signals from a Harmony remote (a Roku and a Tivo) on 2 different computers. The Girs client seemed to give more consistent results than the IrToy but I don't know if it matters.

I have a copy of IrToy firmware labeled v23-test 1 if it is of any use.

Can IrScrutinizer generate a combo signal like Roku uses?

Interesting. Notable is that the IrToy frequency measurements appear to be off. Possibly you can try with the remote held closer to the 'toy; the non-demodulating sensor (QSE159) should be used in cm/inch distance.

Yes, it can, but it is not entirely trivial. You have to define a new protocol in IrpProtocols.ini (or a private version thereof). For your case, this entry will do it:

Distance doesn't seem to be the problem with the IrToy. At <1 cm I still get a different frequency with every capture varying as much as 20k.
With your design frequency is very consistent from one capture to the next. Time to put the IrToy back in the drawer and forget about it.

Can't argue on that ;-). The IrToy seems to be quite dead for DangerousPrototypes anyway,,,

Nice that you have had good experience with my firmware. I do not take all the credit, the main algorithm for the capture was written by Michael Dreher, see [Link: hifi-remote.com] and links therein.
