About to buy this unit, but I will not do so if I cannot verify that it has discrete on/off codes available. Do you know?

This is not a guarantee... but LG is generally pretty good about implementing discrete codes. I note that the model you mention has an RS232 port, which does indicate it was designed with control in mind.
