I'm trying to find TIVO codes to put into its remote so it will correctly control power on the Yamaha RX-V765. The TIVO on-line display lists a slew of them, but thus far I've not figured out which may work. (Volume/mute seems OK..) I've been told that the remote stores two codes so it can turn the TV & a receiver on/off. So I guess I must enter the right code AND then the TV's code to make it work? If I give up and buy the "learning" remote, will that work?

No its the yamaha's use of two key power scheme, one key for on, and another standby. A remote like tivo peanut with single power key will not be able do both commands needed by the yamaha.
For the tivo remote to control the power of a tv, AV stereo and the volume of the av stereo, its done in 3 steps:
1. press and hold Tivo & Tv power keys until the light remains on, enter the tv code
2. press and hold Tivo & Mute keys until the light remains on, enter av stereo code
3. press and hold Tivo & Tv power keys until the light remains on, enter the av stereo code again

Yamaha receivers use the NEC1 IR protocol, which is the most common protocol. Any learning remote should be able to learn the RX-V765 signals. However, I suppose that you want to use Power toggle, rather than separate signals for Power ON and Power Off. Does your Yamaha remote provide a Power toggle button? If it does a learning remote will work fine. If it doesn't, then one possibility is this Vizio remote. Use setup code Audio 1476, and use the 994 command to assign EFC 36741 to the Power button. Or you could buy a RCA RCRP05B, but the power button can't be re-assigned in this remote. You could put the Power toggle EFC on the Live button instead. Both remotes can control a Tivo.

Some tivo remotes have learning capability, Glo tivo remotes, if the OP can get the toggle command from cheap universal or oem cable remote he might have already, then upgrade to glo remote, and teach the toggle command to it.

Neither the TIVO peanut or the Yamaha original remotes has a separate power on & off buttons, both have power toggles. Plus, it all used to work fine, until a TIVO upgrade. The question is: With this double-code scheme [Is this documented anywhere?], and having to test the about a dozen codes TIVO suggests; is there any faster way to figure out which code I need? Or is there a way to first narrow down the code choice?

Sorry but no. The codes are only available via on-screen menu.
When testing the codes, try with stereo both on & off, for each code. If you already added a tv code, reset the remote for now just until you find working code with toggle:
1. press and hold Tivo & Tv power keys until the light remains on 2. press thumbs down 3 times 3. press enter, on the bottom row of keys
Now to test the power on av stereo:
1.press and hold Tivo & Tv power keys until the light remains on, enter the first stereo code. Press the power key twice, to see if it goes on & off. Continue testing each code with the stereo on & off, until you find a toggle.

Now to test the power on av stereo: ...... Thanks. That is surely faster. Can I use the same technique to re-find the TV's code?
